Germany: Saarland Hurricanes hold off Straubing rally for first win of season

The Saarland Hurricanes (1-2) picked up their first victory of the German Football League season this past weekend, building a dominant first-half lead before holding off a late charge from the Straubing Spiders (0-3) for a 21-16 win in Straubing.

After two difficult opening weeks, the result was an important one for the Hurricanes, who made the long trip home with a much-needed victory and plenty of positive performances to build on.

Defense sets the tone

The game got off to a shaky start for the visitors when the Straubing Spiders recovered a surprise onside kick. However, the Saarland Hurricanes quickly regained control when Tobias Scheibe intercepted a pass from quarterback Alexander Biebl, giving the visitors excellent field position. The Hurricanes wasted little time taking advantage as Malcolm King capped the drive with the game’s first touchdown.

While Straubing managed to get on the scoreboard with a field goal from Kristof Komiszar, the Hurricanes defense remained in control for much of the first half, consistently limiting the hosts’ offensive opportunities.

Youngblood sparks the offense

One of the game’s biggest difference-makers was Joshua Youngblood.

After producing a strong return deep into Straubing territory, Youngblood later punched the ball into the end zone to extend the Hurricanes’ lead to 14-3.

He wasn’t finished.

With just seconds remaining before halftime, quarterback Norman Douglas Jr. connected with Youngblood on a long touchdown pass that gave the visitors a commanding 21-3 advantage heading into the locker room.

The combination of Youngblood’s explosive playmaking and a disciplined defensive effort put the Hurricanes firmly in control after two quarters.

Straubing fights back

The second half proved much more challenging for the visitors.

Several turnovers and stalled drives allowed the Spiders to gain momentum. Playing without injured starting quarterback David Perkins, Straubing began to find success behind Biebl despite his early miscue.

Late in the third quarter, Biebl connected with Anthony Earl Green Jr. for a touchdown that cut the deficit to 21-10.

The pressure continued to build in the fourth quarter when Anthony Earl Green Jr. added a second touchdown. A failed two-point conversion kept the Hurricanes in front, but the margin had been reduced to just five points.

Hurricanes close it out

With the game hanging in the balance, the Saarland Hurricanes showed the composure they needed.

Rather than allowing the comeback to continue, the offense controlled possession during the closing minutes and kept valuable time running off the clock. That prevented the Spiders from getting one final opportunity to complete the rally.

Youngblood finished as the standout performer for the visitors with two touchdowns and impact plays in multiple phases of the game, while the defense delivered several key stops throughout the afternoon.

For the Saarland Hurricanes, it was not always pretty, but it was effective. After a dominant first half and a determined finish, they finally have their first win of the 2026 season.
