With almost a full quarter to play, Osos Rivas held a solid 28-12 lead over the Las Rozas Black Demons in the Spanish Bowl being played at the Cerro del Telégrafo Sports Center in Madrid before the weather, and not their opponents, derailed their plans.
The game was halted and now has been delayed indefinitely.
Until that point, Osos Rivas seemed to be in control of their destiny. Behind first half touchdowns by running backs Denzel Duchenne, Herbert Gamboa and receiver Álvaro Guitián on a pass from quarterback Sergio Barbero, the unbeaten Madrid squad jumped out to a 21-0 second quarter lead.
Black Demons quarterback David de Diego finally got his team on the scoreboard, connecting with Jorge García Vargas to narrow the gap to 21-6 at the break.
That seemed to give Las Rozas momentum, and in the third quarter, de Diego found Vargas again to creep even closer, 21-12.
The Osos powerful ground game struck again though as Duchenne, on a first and 10 from the Black Demons 32 yard line, simply burst outside and raced untouched to the end zone to extend the lead to 28-12 heading into the fourth quarter.
However, with the Black Demons in possession at midfield early in the final period, the storm clouds had literally gathered with an electrical storm looming. At that point, the referees halted the game with almost the entire fourth quarter to be played.
So, the Spanish championship title will remain in limbo until a date is set.
