Badalona Dracs capture 2nd straight Spanish Cup

The Badalona Dracs defended their Spanish Cup title by blanking the LG OLED Las Rozas Black Demons 24-0 at Pedro Escartín Stadium in Guadalajara, Spain.

Badalona quarterback Sergi Gonzalo threw two touchdown passes and ran one in himself while Jorge Ruiz kicked a field goal and three extra points. Wide receivers Guillem García and Albert Pascual both caught touchdown passes from Gonzalo. However the MVP of the game was linebacker Felipe Archilla who recorded a key interception which led to a touchdown.

The game started slowly as it took Badalona until the second quarter to begin figuring out the Black Demons defense but Gonzalo finally connected with Raul Cernuda to give the Dracs excellent field position in the red zone. Then he found Garcia wide open for the game’s first score giving Badalona a 7-0 second quarter lead. Ruiz  then kicked a field goal to increase the lead to 10-0 before Archilla picked off an errant pass from Las Rozas quarterback Alejandro Álvarez. Gonzalo carried the ball in himself on the next play and Badalona took a 17-0 lead into the break.

On the first possession of the second half, the Dracs wasted no time as Gonzalo threw a touchdown strike to Pascual and Badalona took a commanding 24-0 lead.

Neither team could move the ball after that as both defenses stiffened and the Dracs were able to cruise to the win.

Both teams will now prepare for the start of the Spanish regular season which kicks off on the weekend of January 19/20.
