Copenhagen Towers, Triangle Razorbacks headed to Denmark’s Mermaid Bowl

The two top teams in Denmark in 2016, the Copenhagen Towers and Triangle Razorbacks, took care of business in last weekend’s Danish semifinals and advanced to the Mermaid Bowl, Denmark’s championship game.

Each team has only lost one game during the season. To the other.

Razorbacks Edge Gold Diggers 35-28

Friday night, the Razorbacks had a battle on their hands against the  Søllerød Gold Diggers but prevailed 35-28. Quarterback Duke DeLancelotti threw three touchdown passes and ran one in himself. Wide receiver Oliver Holmlund caught two of those touchdowns passes, Mathias Krage added one and veteran running back Geoffrey Lewis scored a key late touchdown.

Gold Diggers Christian Egedal threw two touchdown passes and ran one in himself after relieving starter Morten Forsbøls who threw one himself.

In a game which was sloppy from the outset riddled with interceptions and fumbles, neither team could gain any momentum in the first half which ended in a 7-7 tie.

They saved the fireworks for the second half.

The two teams scored seven touchdowns in the final two quarters with neither gaining an edge as Søllerød kept matching the Razorbacks score for score. That is until Lewis scampered for his touchdown midway through the fourth quarter to give Triangle what seemed to be a comfortable lead 35-21. Nevertheless, the Gold Diggers dug deep as Egedal first found receiver Philip Holm Boye for a long gain and then carried the ball in to close the gap to 35-28.

But the onside kick failed and the Razorbacks managed to hold on for the win.

Towers Overwhelm Demons 49-14

The Amager Demons fairy tale playoff run ended early in their semifinal game against the Copenhagen Towers Saturday at Gentofte Sports Park in Copenhagen as the Towers rolled up 42 first half points and cruised in the second to a 49-14 drubbing of the Demons.

Copenhagen scored early and often in the opening two quarters as Danish national team quarterback Kasper Skyum was masterful throwing two touchdown passes and keeping the Demons defense off balance throughout the game. Running back Michel Konate rushed for two touchdowns and Casper Bo Jensen, Thomas Fairies, Troen Klixbüll, Niemann Green and Lau Mikkelsen all scored one each.

The shell-shocked Demons finally got on the scoreboard in the third on a Lars Hyrsting touchdown run and Hyrsting scored the only other Amager touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

Razorbacks, Towers have 12 titles between them

So the Razorbacks and Towers will face each other for the second time ever in Denmark’s title game – Mermaid Bowl XXVIII. The last time they met in the championship in 2013, Copenhagen came away with a 28-21 win.

This will be the ninth trip to the Mermaid Bowl for the Razorbacks in 10 years, which they have won six times. Copenhagen is making its third appearance in four years and seventh overall. The Towers have won the Danish title six times, most recently in 2014.
