From Prague to Pinnacle: Czech RB Jakub Brezina sparks Örebro’s Superserien ascent
When the Örebro Black Knights signed Czech national team running back Jakub Brezina this offseason, they envisioned a game-changer. Five weeks into the Swedish Superserien season, the 25-year-old has not only met those hopes—he’s redefined them.
AFL champion turned Swedish sensation
Fresh off propelling the Prague Black Panthers to their first Austrian Football League title in 2024 (716 rushing yards, 5 TDs), Brezina brought his championship pedigree to Sweden. His league-leading 475 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns through five games have anchored Örebro’s offense, but his impact transcends stats. “Jakub was our #1 choice, and our expectations were high. He has been all that, and even more,” said Black Knights head coach Branko Mutic.

Master of the zone scheme
Brezina’s 158-yard showcase against the Tyresö Royal Crowns exemplified his rare blend of patience and explosiveness. Mutic credits his “reads in the zone scheme” and innate ability to “feel the defence and find the gap to exploit.” This football IQ, honed during Prague’s title run, allows Brezina to average 6.2 yards per carry despite facing stacked boxes.
The engine of Örebro’s attack
Beyond rushing, Brezina’s 142 all-purpose yards per game reflect his versatility. He’s a safety valve in the passing game and a threat on returns, but his relentless drive sets him apart. “Jakub always wants more from himself and tries to find ways to improve,” Mutic noted. This mentality fuels critical plays, such as his 30-yard touchdown run against Oslo that shifted momentum in a tight contest.
Road to redemption
Next up, Örebro faces the Oslo Vikings again on May 31, an excellent test for Brezina’s MVP-caliber form. With the Black Knights eyeing a playoff push, his ability to dismantle defenses—whether on the ground, through the air, or on special teams—will dictate their trajectory.
For now, Brezina’s journey from Czech prodigy to Superserien standout stands as a testament to Europe’s growing football talent pool.
