Paderborn Dolphins withdraw from GFL amid financial challenges

The Paderborn Dolphins have voluntarily withdrawn from the German Football League (GFL) for the 2026 season, citing immediate financial challenges despite having recently secured their place in the league on the field.

A difficult but necessary decision
The move follows a demanding 2025 season where the Dolphins finished last in the GFL North with a 1-11 record. The team then fought to maintain their league status, defeating the Hamburg Pioneers in a two-game relegation series. They won 38-14 at home and narrowly lost 28-27 in Hamburg, advancing by a combined score of 65-42. However, this on-field success was overshadowed by financial reality. Managing Director and Head Coach Jason Irmscher stated the club faced “a very high five-digit amount that we would have had to raise—and that within 24 hours” to meet licensing requirements, making withdrawal the only responsible option.

Rebuilding from the ground up
Instead of risking the club’s future, leadership chose to regroup in the regional league. A recent donation drive highlighted strong community support, garnering over 200 contributions to help settle existing debts. Irmscher made it clear the focus is now on strengthening the club’s foundation, particularly through youth development, with the goal of earning promotion back to GFL2 quickly. This step back, though tough, is viewed as essential for the Dolphins to return financially stable and competitively stronger.
