Germany crowned IFAF U15 Mixed Euros champions
Germany claimed the U15 Mixed IFAF European Youth Flag Football Championships title with a thrilling 51-42 victory over Slovakia at the Sportanlage Wiesengasse in Innsbruck, Austria having trailed until inside the two-minute warning.
With the game tied at 36-36, Germany produced the only defensive stop of the game then capitalized as Daniel Bluel’s touchdown claimed his side’s first lead of the contest and Jonas Kamberg tagged on a crucial two-point conversion.
Slovakia quarterback Emil Gašperan connected with Maximilián Molnár for his fourth touchdown grab of the game, but the two-point conversion failed in an attempt to even the contest. Germany put the result beyond doubt as strong-armed quarterback Arved Mohr aired the ball out downfield for another touchdown rather than try to run down the clock and then hit Bluel for the two-point conversion that put the result beyond doubt.
“We had some bad moments during the tournament, but we always came back and we won the championship,” said German quarterback Mohr.
Germany, who had lost 41-34 to Slovakia during the group stages, cruised past previously unbeaten Italy 42-26 in the semifinals, while Slovakia won for a sixth straight time with a 25-6 result over Spain.
“We needed a loss to get us here and we came back and won and we stepped up one more time to get the big win,” said Germany head coach Frank Grimm.
Slovakian assistant coach Matej Klobušovský said:
“The team played an amazing game and I am so proud of them. I have no words for the dream of our country winning a medal here.”
