Germany: Braunschweig Lions land top Div. III QB Ryon Thomas for 2026 season

The Braunschweig Lions of the German Football League have secured their new offensive leader for the 2026 season, announcing the signing of American quarterback Ryon Thomas, a dynamic playmaker from Fairleigh Dickinson University who brings both passing accuracy and rushing ability to the European game.

College standout to pro prospect
The 6’1″, 190-pound quarterback from Mattapoisett, Massachusetts put together an impressive collegiate career at FDU, where he threw for 5,910 yards and 45 touchdowns while adding another 1,112 rushing yards and 22 scores on the ground. His most remarkable statistic was his 69% completion rate over four seasons, demonstrating exceptional accuracy and decision-making. His 2024 campaign was particularly outstanding, as he threw for over 2,600 yards and 19 touchdowns while rushing for 650 yards and 14 additional scores, earning him Offensive MVP honors at the FCS National Bowl Game.

European experience and connections
Thomas already has familiarity with European football after spending part of the 2025 season with the Wroclaw Panthers of the European League of Football in a backup role, where he worked with current Braunschweig Lions head coach Brayden McCombs. That existing relationship proved crucial in his decision to join the Lions for 2026, despite receiving interest from other teams. His professional experience also includes a tryout with the New York Jets in 2025, demonstrating his potential to compete at higher levels.

Versatile athlete with football pedigree
Beyond his quarterback skills, Thomas has shown versatility by occasionally serving as a punter and brings a lifelong connection to football—he began playing at age six alongside his brother. When not on the field, he works as a high school quarterback coach and enjoys golf during his downtime. His combination of collegiate production, professional experience, and existing coach relationship makes him an intriguing addition to the Braunschweig Lions as they prepare for the 2026 GFL season.
