Colts Austrian LT Bernhard Raimann sidelined by elbow injury
The Indianapolis Colts suffered a significant blow during their 18-16 loss to the Seattle Seahawks when starting left tackle Bernhard Raimann—a native of Steinbrunn, Austria who recently signed a four-year, $100 million contract extension before the 2026 season—exited the game with an elbow injury and did not return, casting uncertainty over his availability for next week’s matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.
Injury impact and initial response
The 6-foot-6, 300-pound Austrian left tackle, who became one of the NFL’s highest-paid offensive linemen with his new deal, was injured near the end of the first half during a touchdown drive. He returned to the sideline in the second half with his helmet and his right arm heavily taped and braced, but only as an emergency option. After the game, head coach Shane Steichen offered little certainty about Raimann’s status, stating, “We’ll see how the week goes. Obviously, he’s dealing with that elbow.” He did, however, praise Raimann’s toughness, adding, “He’s tough as nails. I love Bernie.”
Backup steps into critical role
With their starting left tackle unavailable, the Colts turned to backup Luke Tenuta, who played 26 offensive snaps—more than he had in his entire career prior to Sunday. Before this game, Tenuta had only taken seven offensive snaps and 18 special teams plays during his time with the Green Bay Packers in 2022. Steichen commended his effort, saying, “I thought he went out there and battled like crazy. He’s been doing a hell of a job for us all year.”
Offensive line depth concerns
The injury exacerbates an already challenging situation for Indianapolis at tackle, particularly concerning given Raimann’s crucial role as their franchise left tackle. The team started fourth-round rookie Jalen Travis at right tackle in place of veteran Braden Smith, who was placed on injured reserve last week due to a concussion, ending his season. Losing Raimann, even temporarily, puts further strain on a unit that can ill afford more setbacks as the Colts push for playoff positioning in a tight AFC race.
