79th Rice Bowl Press Conference sets stage for Championship Clash
The head coaches and captains of both the Panasonic Impulse and Obic Seagulls brought plenty of energy and respect to the 79th Rice Bowl press conference held at the Tokyo Dome Hotel on December 15th, setting the tone for what promises to be an emotional and hard-fought championship matchup when the teams meet at the Tokyo Dome on January 3rd.
Familiar faces, high stakes
The press conference featured an intriguing storyline as Obic captain Kengo Bono and Panasonic captain Shota Aone reunited as former university teammates from Kansai University, where they served as captain and vice-captain respectively. Their friendship added a compelling layer to the buildup, with both players exchanging good-natured jokes about each other’s tendencies. When asked about each other’s weaknesses, Bono joked that Aone is “too stoic and can’t see his surroundings,” while Aone countered that Bono‘s attentiveness to others wouldn’t be enough to overcome his own passion on game day.
Coaches identify key players
Both head coaches were clear about which opponents concerned them most heading into the championship game. Obic head coach Masakatsu Tsukada highlighted Panasonic players including linebacker Jabori Williams, running back Genmei Tachikawa, and Mitchell Victor Jamaux as particular threats. Panasonic head coach Naoya Takayama pointed to Obic quarterback Pierce Holley and defensive lineman Rintaro Yamada as players requiring special attention in their game planning.
Halftime show announcement
The press conference also featured the announcement that singer Leo Ieiri would perform during halftime, marking her first musical appearance of 2026. Ieiri expressed her honor at participating in the event, specifically referencing Rihanna‘s memorable Super Bowl halftime performance as inspiration for bringing music and football together. Her appearance adds another layer of excitement to what already promises to be a memorable championship event between two of Japan’s most successful American football programs.
