Dresden Monarchs survive tough test from Lions to stay unbeaten
The Dresden Monarchs remained undefeated in the German Football League on Sunday, overcoming a determined effort from the Braunschweig Lions to escape Eintracht Stadium with a hard-fought 24-16 victory.
After cruising to a 47-8 win over the Lions earlier this season, the Monarchs found a much tougher challenge this time around. Braunschweig controlled possession for long stretches, played physical defense and stayed within striking distance until the final minutes.
Defenses set the tone early
The opening quarter belonged entirely to the defenses.
The Lions moved the ball effectively behind quarterback Ryon Thomas but struggled to finish drives, while the Monarchs offense was largely kept in check. Through the first quarter, Dresden managed only one first down as the Braunschweig defense consistently disrupted the visitors’ rhythm.
The first breakthrough came in the second quarter when Louis Bergeron blocked a Dresden punt deep in Monarchs territory. Léo Hernandez recovered the loose ball in the end zone, and Marc Peschelt’s extra point gave the Lions a 7-0 lead.
Monarchs answer before halftime
The special teams score finally woke up the Monarchs offense.
Rocky Lombardi quickly engineered a touchdown drive, connecting with Montigo Moss on a 12-yard scoring pass to tie the game at 7-7. After Peschelt restored the Braunschweig lead with a 28-yard field goal, Dresden struck again just before halftime.
Lombardi found Jordi Torrededia on a 33-yard touchdown pass, and Florian Finke’s extra point sent the Monarchs into the locker room holding a narrow 14-10 advantage.
Big plays decide the outcome
The second half remained tense.
Peschelt cut the deficit to 14-13 with a 35-yard field goal after the Lions recovered a Dresden fumble. Finke responded with a 32-yard field goal late in the third quarter to extend the lead to 17-13.
The decisive score came in the fourth quarter. After the Lions failed on a key fourth-down attempt, the Monarchs marched down the field behind Lombardi and running back David Moore. The drive ended when Lombardi found Moore on an eight-yard touchdown pass, pushing the lead to 24-13.
Lions refuse to quit
To their credit, the Lions continued to battle.
Thomas led one final drive deep into Dresden territory, and Peschelt connected on a 39-yard field goal to make it 24-16. An onside kick attempt gave Braunschweig one last chance, but the Monarchs secured the ball and ran out the clock.
The victory lifts the Dresden Monarchs to 5-0, while the Braunschweig Lions fall to 0-5 despite arguably their strongest performance of the season.
