USA and Canada renew North American flag football rivalry
The United States and Canada will renew one of flag football’s most compelling rivalries on June 19 when both the men’s and women’s national teams meet in the USA Football Rivalry Series at Dignity Health Sports Park in Los Angeles.
The showcase event comes as both nations continue preparations for IFAF World Flag 2026 in Germany, a tournament that will bring together teams from 19 countries and serve as a major step toward flag football’s Olympic debut at LA28.
Women’s matchup brings championship pedigree
The women’s game features two of the strongest programs in the sport.
The United States, ranked second in the world and the reigning IFAF world champion, faces a Canada squad ranked fourth globally. Both teams topped their groups at the 2025 IFAF Americas Championship, although they never crossed paths in the knockout rounds.
History shows just how competitive this rivalry can be. Canada captured IFAF World Championship titles over the Americans in both 2010 and 2014, while the most recent meeting at The World Games in Chengdu saw the United States emerge with a hard-fought 39-31 victory.
That game featured standout performances from Sara Parker, Emma Racine, Izzy Geraci, Amber Clark-Robinson, and Madison Fulford as the two teams traded momentum throughout the contest.
Men’s teams eye another showdown
The men’s matchup pits the world’s top-ranked team against an improving rival.
The United States enters as the number one team in the world, while Canada is ranked tenth. Their most recent meeting came at Americas Flag 2025 in Panama, where the Americans earned a 54-26 victory during group play.
The United States eventually shared the gold medal with Mexico, while Canada finished with bronze.
Quarterback Darrell Doucette acknowledged the progress of the Canadian program, noting that the team has continued to improve and is becoming a legitimate contender on the international stage.
Bigger goals ahead
While pride and regional bragging rights are always part of any United States–Canada rivalry, both nations will also view Friday’s games as an important measuring stick ahead of World Flag 2026.
With elite talent on both sidelines and plenty of history between them, fans can expect two highly competitive contests in Los Angeles.
