Czech Republic: Vysocina Gladiators hold off late rally from Nitra Knights
The Vysocina Gladiators (8-1) strengthened their position near the top of the Czech Snapbacks League standings on Saturday, defeating the Nitra Knights (6-3) 35-20 after surviving a furious second-half comeback attempt.
For much of the afternoon, the Gladiators appeared to be in complete control. But three touchdowns from Mário Bír helped the Knights turn what looked like a comfortable home victory into a tense battle before Vysocina finally pulled away late.
Fast start sets the tone
The defending champions wasted little time making an impact.
Matěj Majerčák opened the scoring by returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown, immediately putting the Gladiators in front. After both defenses settled in and forced a series of punts, Vít Bezecný connected with Karel Peprný on a 43-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter.
Although the extra point was blocked, the Gladiators had built a 13-0 advantage.
The Knights finally got on the board in the second quarter when Mário Bír caught a short touchdown pass. However, Kevin Sherman intercepted the blocked conversion attempt and returned it for two points, extending the Vysocina lead to 15-6.
Petr Čermák then added a 19-yard touchdown before halftime as the Gladiators carried a 22-6 lead into the break.
Knights storm back
The third quarter belonged to Nitra.
Bír caught a two-yard touchdown pass and then added the two-point conversion. A few minutes later, he struck again, hauling in a spectacular 61-yard touchdown reception to pull the Knights within 22-20.
Suddenly, all the momentum belonged to the visitors.
But the response from the Gladiators was immediate. Bezecný found Peprný for a 78-yard touchdown pass, restoring a two-score lead and shifting the momentum back to the home sideline.
Big play seals it
The Knights continued to battle, but the Gladiators defense delivered a key stop when Jakub Čížek intercepted a pass from Desmond Prusia.
With less than five minutes remaining, Vysocina put the game away. Facing third-and-10, Bezecný launched an 85-yard touchdown strike to Majerčák, who raced into the end zone to complete the scoring.
The victory improves the Vysocina Gladiators to 8-1 with one regular-season game remaining, while the Nitra Knights fall to 6-3 despite a spirited comeback effort led by Bír’s three-touchdown performance.
