Germany: Potsdam Royals QB Chris Helbig leads best offense in the league

After only four seasons in the German Football League, the Potsdam Royals are one win away from making it to their first German Bowl in franchise history.

This weekend, Potsdam faces GFL North rivals, the Cologne Crocodiles in the semifinals.

The league-leading Royals have rolled to an 11-0 record (including the quarterfinal win over the Straubing Spiders) and have had only two somewhat close games during that run. In other words, they have dominated all opposition.

The key to their transformation into a powerhouse has been their offense. They lead the league in almost every key offensive category including number of plays (699), total yards (5,777), yards per play (8.3), touchdowns (81), points (580), points per game (52.7), and yards per game (525.2).

The anchor to the league’s best offense has been quarterback, Chris Helbig. This Thorton, Colorado native is coming off of two years playing for Southern Utah University (NCAA Div. 1, FCS) and now in his first season in the pros. He has been on an absolute tear and is in the running as the GFL’s MVP for this season.

Helbig led the league in passing yards with 3,358 for the season. He was also near the top in the league in other categories too such as touchdown passes (35), yards per game, (305.3) and completions (225).

He was also a dual threat for his team when it mattered most as well. In a rushing offense, ranked second in the league with 2,253 yards rushing and 40 touchdowns, Helbig contributed 322 yards on the ground and 13 touchdowns of his own.

With his outstanding play, and that of the entire Royals squad, Potsdam has become a legitimate championship contender.
