Italy: Aquile open IFL season with tough road win over Warriors
The Ferrara Aquile (1–0) opened their Italian Football League season with a hard-nosed 22–2 road victory over the Bologna Warriors (0–1), using a strong defensive performance and timely scoring to pull away late in a physical contest that was closer than the final score suggests.
Defense dominates early
Ferrara set the tone immediately, with quarterback Ryan Kraft connecting with receiver Fabro for a touchdown on the opening drive. The extra point from Antochi gave the Aquile a 7–0 lead that would hold until halftime. Both defenses controlled much of the first half, with Bologna’s unit preventing further scoring despite strong field position from a key punt return. The Warriors offense, however, could not capitalize against a Ferrara defense coordinated by coach Hanely.
Aquile capitalize late
The game remained a one-possession contest until the fourth quarter, when Ferrara finally broke through. After a Bologna special teams error gave the Aquile strong field position, Kraft found Medini for another touchdown. Antochi added a field goal shortly after to extend the lead to 16–0. Bologna managed to get on the board with a safety from a bad snap, but any hope of a comeback ended when Diego Rinaldi recovered a Warriors fumble in the red zone and returned it approximately 95 yards for a touchdown.
The win showcased Ferrara’s ability to capitalize on mistakes and finish strong, while Bologna will look to clean up special teams errors and offensive execution after a promising defensive performance kept them in the game into the final quarter.
