Germany: Hildesheim Invaders end 37-year derby drought with dramatic win over Braunschweig Lions

The Hildesheim Invaders (4-0) remained unbeaten in the German Football League and made history on Saturday, defeating the Braunschweig Lions (0-4) 31-27 in front of 2,443 fans at Eintracht Stadium in Braunschweig to claim their first derby victory over their longtime rivals since 1989.

For much of the afternoon, the matchup lived up to its billing as “The Clash.” The Invaders were pushed to the limit by a determined Braunschweig squad, but found enough big plays and timely defensive stops to leave Braunschweig with an emotional victory and sole possession of first place in the GFL North.

Lions strike first

The hosts wasted little time making a statement.

Quarterback Ryon Thomas broke free for a 46-yard touchdown run on Braunschweig’s opening drive, giving the Lions an early 7-0 lead and energizing the home crowd.

The Invaders responded immediately. Quarterback Nelson Hughes found Philipp Dolezal for a 34-yard touchdown pass, and Paul Krause’s extra point tied the game at 7-7.

The remainder of the first half featured strong defensive football from both sides. Despite several mistakes, penalties, and missed opportunities, Hildesheim continued battling and eventually found a breakthrough.

Turnover changes everything

The game’s first major turning point came just before halftime.

Linebacker Frank Häring knocked the ball loose from Thomas, and Willem Vancompernolle recovered the fumble for the Invaders.

The offense capitalized.

Hughes guided Hildesheim down the field and connected with Lennart Stukenborg for a touchdown that gave the visitors a 14-7 halftime lead.

After the break, the Invaders extended the advantage to 17-7 on a field goal by Krause and appeared ready to pull away.

Derby turns into a thriller

The Lions refused to go quietly.

Thomas continued to make plays with both his arm and legs, helping Braunschweig cut the deficit to 17-14 and keeping the pressure squarely on the undefeated visitors.

The Invaders answered again early in the fourth quarter when Hughes found Noah Bomba for a 15-yard touchdown pass and a 24-14 lead.

But the drama was only beginning.

Thomas produced a spectacular 51-yard touchdown run to bring the Lions within three points before running back Matti Probst restored a ten-point cushion with a one-yard touchdown run.

Invaders finish the job

Even then, the game was far from over.

Peter Anderson returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown, trimming the Hildesheim lead to 31-27 after the extra point attempt failed.

The final minutes became a tense battle. Brandon Potts intercepted Hughes in the closing stages, giving Braunschweig one last opportunity.

However, when the Lions mounted their final drive, the Invaders defense delivered. Kyle Kitchens came up with a crucial stop on Thomas, helping force incompletions on the final two plays and sealing the victory.

It was not a flawless performance from the Hildesheim Invaders, but it was a historic one. After 37 years of frustration in this rivalry, the unbeaten Invaders finally left Braunschweig with a derby victory.
