AFC Vienna Vikings edge Dragons in dramatic Charity Bowl finish

The AFC Vienna Vikings (6-4) closed out the Austrian Football League regular season with a dramatic 20-19 Charity Bowl victory over the Danube Dragons (8-2), surviving a late comeback before reclaiming the lead in the closing moments.

The win came in thrilling fashion as the Vikings answered after surrendering the lead in the fourth quarter, with Felix Schuster delivering the game-winning field goal.

Strong first half

Defense controlled the opening quarter as neither offense could find its rhythm. Once the game opened up in the second period, however, the Vikings took command.

Niklas Lechner provided the offensive spark, hauling in two touchdown receptions to give the home team control. Schuster added a field goal just before halftime, sending Vienna into the break with a comfortable 17-0 advantage after an impressive first-half performance on both sides of the ball.

Dragons rally falls short

The Dragons came out with renewed energy after halftime and finally broke through with their first touchdown of the afternoon. A missed extra point left the score at 17-6 heading into the fourth quarter.

The visitors continued to build momentum, scoring another touchdown to trim the deficit to five points after an unsuccessful two-point conversion attempt. They then completed the comeback with another touchdown and a successful extra point to grab a 19-17 lead, putting the pressure squarely on the home side.

The Vikings, however, had one final answer. Schuster stayed calm under pressure and split the uprights with his second field goal of the game, restoring the lead at 20-19 and ultimately sealing the Charity Bowl victory.

The result sends Vienna into the Wild Card Round with momentum, where they will travel to face the Vienna Knights. The Dragons, meanwhile, head into their bye week after nearly pulling off a remarkable comeback, giving them extra time to prepare for the postseason after another strong regular season.
