Austrian Bowl XL: Vienna Vikings conquer Dragons, claim 15th title in historic comeback
The AFC Vienna Vikings overturned a 14-point deficit to defeat archrivals, the Danube Dragons 27-17 in Austrian Bowl XL at NV Arena St. Pölten, snapping a four-year championship drought and avenging final losses to the Dragons in 2022 and 2023 before 4,334 fans.
Dragons dominate early momentum
The Dragons stormed ahead with a physical first quarter, capitalizing on Vikings penalties and defensive miscues. Running back Lukas Schramm powered in a short-yardage touchdown, followed by receiver Devin Childress’s end-zone grab just before the quarter expired. Kicker Thorsten Tannert two PATs gave the Dragons a commanding 14-0 lead, mirroring their regular-season dominance.
Eder’s magic sparks turnaround
Trailing 14-0 late in the second quarter, Vikings running back Fabian Eder ignited the comeback with a gritty touchdown run, capped by Kevin Voznyak’s PAT. Eder then delivered the game’s defining moment: appearing to be tackled by Dragons defender Elias Ferchel mid-run, he rolled over the defender without touching the turf and sprinted for a 23-yard score. Voznyak’s extra point tied the game 14-14, electrifying the Vikings sideline.
Defense seals dynasty redemption
After a 35-yard Tannert field goal put the Dragons ahead 17-14 in the third quarter, Eder completed his hat-trick with a decisive touchdown run. Voznyak’s PAT and a 36-yard rushing score by quarterback Russell Minor-Shaw—who evaded multiple tackles—extended the lead to 27-17. The Vikings defense stifled the Dragons in the fourth quarter, allowing just 53 total yards and zero points.
Legacy secured
The victory marked the Vikings’ record-extending 15th Austrian Bowl title and first since 2020. “This win is three years of redemption,” said head coach Benjamin Sobotka. “Once we took control, we played Vikings football in all phases. We kept chopping at the tree until it fell.” Quarterback Minor-Shaw added, “This title fuels us—but tonight, we celebrate.”
Road ahead
The Dragons, runners-up for the third time since rebranding from the Klosterneuburg Mercenaries, face an offseason of reflection. “The Vikings adjusted better,” admitted quarterback Alexander Reischl. “This loss stings, especially for our veterans.” Head coach Florian Pos vowed, “We’ll return stronger,” while the Vikings turn their focus to defending their crown in 2026.
