Germany: Berlin Rebels rally from 16-point deficit to stun Braunschweig Lions

The Berlin Rebels (2-4) erased a 16-point first-half deficit to edge the Braunschweig Lions (3-5) 24-22 in a dramatic German Football League showdown at Eintracht Stadium. The visitors rallied from an early 16-0 hole before holding off a furious late charge, stopping Braunschweig’s game-winning two-point conversion attempt on the final play to secure a crucial road victory.

Rebels refuse to fold

The afternoon could hardly have started worse for Berlin.

The Lions struck first on a 22-yard field goal by Mark-Robin Peschelt before Ryon Thomas connected with Peter Anderson on a 40-yard touchdown pass. Moments later, Fabian Schröder returned an interception 42 yards for another touchdown, giving Braunschweig a commanding 16-0 lead.

Instead of unraveling, the Rebels settled in offensively. Quarterback Tyquell Fields found Filip Uderhardt for a 41-yard touchdown, and just before halftime Naz Bombata powered in from two yards out to trim the deficit to 16-14 and shift the momentum.

Defense delivers the turning point

The second half belonged to the Rebels defense.

After Braunschweig drove deep into Berlin territory, pressure from Paul Seifert forced Thomas into an errant throw that was intercepted by Lamonte McDougle, ending a promising scoring opportunity.

Fields then answered with a 68-yard completion to Uderhardt that set up Kris Cain’s 30-yard field goal, giving the Rebels their first lead at 17-16.

Later in the fourth quarter, newcomer Exavier Edwards came up with another huge defensive play, intercepting a pass intended for Anderson in the end zone to halt another threatening Lions drive.

Holding on at the finish

The Rebels added valuable insurance when Emil Fuchs broke loose for a 30-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 24-16 with just over a minute remaining.

The Lions weren’t finished. Thomas guided the home side down the field before throwing a 12-yard touchdown pass to Anderson to cut the margin to two points. Rather than kick the extra point, Braunschweig elected to go for the win.

Thomas kept the ball on the two-point attempt, but the Berlin defense stood firm, stopping him just short of the goal line to seal the victory.

The loss drops the Lions to 3-5 heading into a bye week before they return to action on August 8 against the Hildesheim Invaders (5-2). The Rebels, meanwhile, carry valuable momentum into next weekend’s matchup with the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes (1-6) as they continue their push to climb back into the playoff race.
