Buffalo Bills: Four Takeaways from the first-week training camp

The Buffalo Bills have been in training camp for about a week, participating in six sessions, including two in padded practice, and enjoying a day off on Wednesday as they approach the midpoint of their stay at St. John Fisher University.

This is the first real chance for supporters to learn more about this club, and it begins to provide some clues as to what to anticipate for the forthcoming season. Considering the season as a whole, it is a small sample size, but several tendencies from the previous week have proved noteworthy.

A brand new WR Stefon Diggs out on a mission

A potential conflict between the Buffalo Bills and their star wide receiver Stefon Diggs was one of the major offseason storylines. Because of how the previous season ended, the plot had gained momentum, but it truly took off when he skipped the first practice of the required minicamp.

After the first session, Diggs addressed the media and was incredibly forthright and candid, answering all queries and putting an end to that plotline. From that point on, Stefon Diggs’ story should thrill fans because the former All-Pro appears to be on a mission based on how he has trained thus far in training camp and his consistent ability to make plays like these.

Stefon Diggs has spent the last three seasons with the Buffalo Bills as one of the top wide receivers in the NFL, but this season might be his finest one yet based on how he has performed thus far in training camp and with this, his team could grow to be one of the best to bet on the super bowl.

Dalton Kincaid has grown to be an integral part of Bill’s offence

The performance of tight-end Dalton Kincaid during training camp thus far has been another significant takeaway. It was unclear what Kincaid’s position may be given that Dawson Knox was already on the roster when the Bills selected him in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Given that Kincaid has likely been targeted more than Stefon Diggs, this question appears to have been resolved very early in training camp. Several of his teammates talked favorably of the youngster on the Up & Adams Show after practice on Tuesday.

In the past, tight ends have had a hard time in their first season. Dalton Kincaid has already passed the first test at training camp, which is a good sign that he can go against the norm. If the rookie tight end keeps up this level of play in the preseason, he could have a great first season.

A healthy Jordan Poyer ready to ply his trade at the highest level

One of the biggest summertime surprises was Jordan Poyer’s return. He was a free agent and most likely would have played football this season somewhere else. However, the two parties were able to agree on a new two-year contract, and the Bills were able to retain their outstanding safety tandem of Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde for at least another season.

Jordan Poyer had another good season last year. He picked off four passes and stopped eight others, and he was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career. But Poyer kept getting hurt, and even though he only missed four games, the injuries seemed to affect his play by the end of the season.

Jordan Poyer, though, has played exceptionally well and seems to be in great shape over the first two weeks of training camp. He’s intercepted a few passes already in training camp, like this one from earlier this week. The defense will benefit greatly if Tre’Davious White and Poyer are both healthy to begin the season.

Two starting spots on the defense for the Buffalo Bills are still up for grabs.

With a team like the Buffalo Bills, where most of the players have been together for a few seasons, there weren’t many fights for starting jobs on offense during training camp. On defense, things were different, and after a week of training camp, there doesn’t seem to be a clear favorite for two places.

Historically, tight ends have had a hard time in their first season. Dalton Kincaid has already passed the first training camp test, which makes us think he can go against the norm. If he keeps playing like this in the preseason, the rookie tight end could have a great season.

The spot next to Tre’Davious White at cornerback has also been more of a fight than I think many people had hoped. After Kaiir Elam’s first year, which was full of ups and downs, it was hoped that he would take over as the starting quarterback.

But that hasn’t happened, as Dane Jackson has had a slight edge with the first team over the other cornerbacks since the start of training camp. The team has been switching between Elam and Christian Benford, so this spot hasn’t been chosen yet. However, expectations were higher for a player who was picked in the first round. The Buffalo Bills still have a lot of training camp fights to go, but these are probably the two most important ones.
