CBS silence speaks volumes after Tony Romo apology

Tony Romo says he wants to return to CBS Sports, but the network’s response to the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback’s public apology Tuesday was strikingly simple: no comment.

Romo broke his silence following his July OWI arrest, saying in an Instagram statement that he pleaded no contest to a civil offense and accepted responsibility for his actions. He also addressed his struggles with alcohol after attempting to stop using pain medication stemming from injuries during his NFL career.

Romo closed by saying he was focusing on his health and family before, “in time,” returning to CBS.

That part immediately raised eyebrows.

CBS stays quiet

According to Puck’s John Ourand, CBS declined to comment on Romo’s statement and instead referred back to its original announcement placing him on indefinite leave.

The network’s silence does not settle Romo’s future, but it certainly does not sound like a public welcome back.

Romo has spent nine seasons on the network’s No. 1 NFL broadcast team alongside Jim Nantz. After putting Romo on leave, however, CBS moved J.J. Watt into the lead booth.

That leaves Romo talking openly about a return while his employer has offered no indication that one is coming.

Romo makes his case

Romo’s statement tackled the issue head-on. He accepted responsibility, discussed his problems with alcohol and asked for privacy while dealing with his health and family.

He also made his intentions clear.

Rather than leaving his broadcasting future vague, Romo specifically mentioned returning to CBS. Whether the network shares that plan remains another matter entirely.

Ourand reported that Romo’s statement did not appear to have been coordinated with CBS, potentially adding another layer to an already uncertain relationship.

There is also considerable money involved. Romo reportedly has four years and $72 million remaining on his contract.

Watt changes the equation

The biggest complication for Romo may already be sitting in his old chair.

By elevating Watt to work with Nantz, CBS has given itself an opportunity to move forward without Romo while his situation plays out.

Romo’s broadcasting work had already drawn criticism before his arrest, and speculation about his long-term future with the network had been building.

His court date is scheduled for Sept. 21, leaving plenty still unresolved.

For now, Romo has said what he needed to say publicly. CBS has chosen not to answer.

In a broadcasting story filled with speculation, that silence may be the most interesting development yet.
