CFL Week 20: West Division playoff battle intensifies with two weeks remaining
With just two weeks remaining in the 2026 Canadian Football League regular season, the West Division playoff race remains wide open, with every game carrying major postseason implications.
The Edmonton Elks lead the division and are chasing first place, while the BC Lions are closing in on a home playoff game. Meanwhile, the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Calgary Stampeders are still fighting to secure their postseason futures.
Week 20 features four games, including three crucial West Division matchups that could dramatically reshape the playoff picture.
Toronto Argonauts at Ottawa REDBLACKS
Friday, Oct. 16 – 7 p.m. ET (Saturday, Oct. 17 – 01:00 CEST)
The Toronto Argonauts return from their Thanksgiving bye knowing they will host the Eastern Semi-Final on October 31.
Quarterback Chad Kelly was a full participant when practice resumed, providing encouraging news as Toronto prepares for the postseason.
The Ottawa REDBLACKS, meanwhile, remain winless at 0-16 and have just two opportunities left to avoid finishing the season without a victory.
For the Argonauts, the priority is maintaining momentum and getting healthy before the playoffs. For Ottawa, it is about salvaging something from a difficult season.
Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Edmonton Elks
Friday, Oct. 16 – 9:30 p.m. ET (Saturday, Oct. 17 – 03:30 CEST)
One of the weekend’s biggest games takes place in Edmonton, where the Elks can take another step toward securing first place in the West Division.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers arrive with renewed confidence after defeating the Calgary Stampeders over Thanksgiving weekend.
The return of quarterback Zach Collaros proved particularly important, with the veteran delivering one of his strongest performances of the season.
Edmonton is also coming off a victory, having defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Week 19.
Both teams have plenty at stake. The Elks want to secure home-field advantage, while Winnipeg is attempting to lock down a playoff berth.
Montreal Alouettes at Saskatchewan Roughriders
Saturday, Oct. 17 – 3 p.m. ET (21:00 CEST)
The Saskatchewan Roughriders face another enormous test when they host the Montreal Alouettes in the second half of their home-and-home series.
Montreal won the first meeting during Thanksgiving weekend and has already secured first place in the East Division, guaranteeing a home Eastern Final on November 7.
The situation is considerably more urgent for Saskatchewan.
The Roughriders have lost four consecutive games and are still trying to secure their playoff position. A victory, combined with a loss by either Calgary or Winnipeg, would clinch a postseason berth.
With the Alouettes already assured of their playoff position, the biggest question is whether Saskatchewan can take advantage of playing at home and end its losing streak.
BC Lions at Calgary Stampeders
Saturday, Oct. 17 – 7 p.m. ET (Sunday, Oct. 18 – 01:00 CEST)
The BC Lions enter Week 20 as the CFL’s hottest team, having won nine of their last 10 games.
Sitting second in the West Division, four points behind Edmonton, the Lions can clinch a home playoff game with a victory over the Calgary Stampeders. A Winnipeg loss would also secure that advantage.
For Calgary, the stakes could hardly be higher.
The Stampeders slipped to last place in the West following their Thanksgiving weekend loss to Winnipeg and are running out of opportunities to keep their playoff hopes alive.
This is also Calgary’s final regular-season game, meaning the Stampeders could finish their schedule without knowing whether they have qualified for the postseason.
West Division race approaching its climax
With Montreal and Toronto already knowing their Eastern playoff destinations, most of the uncertainty surrounds the West.
Edmonton is chasing the division title, BC is pushing for home-field advantage, and Saskatchewan, Winnipeg and Calgary are fighting to stay alive.
By the end of Week 20, the CFL playoff picture could look considerably clearer. But with so many possibilities still on the table, the final stretch promises plenty of drama.
