Colts, Commanders clash in London amid ticket price cuts: Preview, how to watch worldwide

The NFL brings the Indianapolis Colts and Washington Commanders to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, October 4, with a slightly unexpected supporting act: the discount ticket. For a league accustomed to selling its international expansion as an irresistible success story, that deserves a raised eyebrow.

Ticket prices tumble

The Sun reported that some seats originally priced at £245 had been reduced to £79, with upper-tier tickets also falling from £185 to £79. Student offers were part of the push to move remaining inventory. Good news for anyone still shopping. Rather less amusing for those who bought early and paid full whack.

A crack in the NFL’s international armor? Perhaps. Too much London? That remains an open question. AP reports that the following week’s Eagles-Jaguars game sold out quickly despite higher prices. That makes it difficult to declare the entire market exhausted. My reading: London fans are becoming more selective, and the NFL badge alone cannot justify every asking price. The league would do well to remember that a full stadium and a satisfied customer base are two different measures of success.

Back to the football

Anyway, there is a football game to play. Both teams arrive at 1-2 after getting their first wins last weekend. Indianapolis edged Houston 19-17, while Washington beat defending Super Bowl champion Seattle 33-31. A second consecutive victory would make the flight home considerably more pleasant.

Washington will again turn to Marcus Mariota after Jayden Daniels was ruled out Friday with a dislocated left elbow. Mariota threw three touchdown passes against Seattle, giving Dan Quinn’s team reason to believe it can keep moving without its headline attraction. Terry McLaurin and Stefon Diggs give Indianapolis plenty to account for outside.

Taylor faces a tough test

For Shane Steichen’s Colts, Jonathan Taylor is the obvious starting point. He has 258 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns through three games, but faces Washington’s third-ranked run defense. Daniel Jones needs enough help on the ground to bring Josh Downs and tight end Tyler Warren into the game without asking the passing attack to do everything.

That battle up front is my key: can Indianapolis establish Taylor, or will Washington dictate the down and distance? A competitive finish would be welcome. At these newly revised prices, a few spectators might even feel they got a bargain.
