Columbus Aviators pull off thrilling come-from-behind victory against Birmingham Stallions in UFL Showdown

In a thrilling showdown, the Columbus Aviators (4-6) staged an incredible late rally to defeat the Birmingham Stallions (4-6) 36-29 in front of a jubilant home crowd. Jalen Morton, making his first start of the season, threw for 309 yards and four touchdowns, leading the Aviators to a much-needed win that keeps their postseason hopes alive.

A Wild Start

The game kicked off with chaos right from the first play. Dorian Thompson-Robinson of the Stallions was intercepted by O’Donnell Fortune, giving the Aviators possession at the Birmingham 30-yard line. However, Columbus quickly squandered the opportunity, attempting a backward pass that was swatted down by Alex Cook, who scooped it up and raced 73 yards for a defensive touchdown. A blocked extra point attempt turned into a one-point conversion for the Stallions, putting them ahead 6-1.

Back and Forth Action

After the wild start, the Stallions found their rhythm. Thompson-Robinson led a ten-play scoring drive, capped off by a 17-yard touchdown pass to Deon Cain, extending their lead to 13-1. Morton responded with a 16-yard touchdown pass to John Lovett, narrowing the gap to 13-8. The Stallions then scored again with a two-yard touchdown run from Tyrion Davis-Price, pushing the lead to 20-8.

Morton continued to shine, connecting with Gunnar Oakes for a 20-yard touchdown, bringing the score to 20-14 before halftime. The Stallions added a field goal, leading 23-14 at the break.

Second Half Surge

The Aviators came out strong in the second half, forcing a quick three-and-out. Morton orchestrated another impressive drive, culminating in a 34-yard touchdown pass to Lovett, bringing Columbus within two points at 23-21. Birmingham responded with a 43-yard field goal from Anders Carlson, extending their lead to 26-21.

In a critical moment, Morton’s tipped pass was intercepted by Ryan Cooper, giving the Stallions a chance to extend their lead. However, the Aviators defense held strong, forcing another field goal to make it 29-21.

Dramatic Comeback

With just over three minutes left, Morton led a remarkable drive starting from his own nine-yard line. He scrambled for a 14-yard gain and connected with Oakes for a 25-yard completion. A pass interference penalty moved the Aviators deep into Stallions territory. Morton capped the drive with a rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion to Keke Chism, tying the game at 29-29.

The drama didn’t end there. On the next possession, DJ Miller Jr. picked off Thompson-Robinson and returned the ball 39 yards for a touchdown, giving the Aviators a 36-29 lead.

Despite a last-ditch effort from the Stallions, their fourth-and-11 attempt fell incomplete, sealing the victory for Columbus. The Aviators defense was instrumental, holding Birmingham to just 237 total yards and recording four sacks.

With this win, the Aviators will look to close out the regular season at home against the Louisville Kings next Sunday, while the Stallions will regroup after a tough loss.
