Defending champion Auténticos Tigres host unbeaten Borregos Monterrey in rivalry showdown
The Auténticos Tigres UANL (3–0) host the Borregos Monterrey (3–0) Friday night at Gaspar Mass Stadium in a battle of unbeaten teams that could have ramifications well beyond Week 5 of the ONEFA 14 Grandes season.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. local time as two programs with more than 80 years of rivalry history meet again — this time with the Tigres defending the championship they took from Monterrey last November.
Familiar foes meet again
Few rivalries in Mexican college football have carried as much championship weight recently.
The Tigres and Borregos met in four consecutive championship games from 2022 through 2025, with Monterrey winning the first three. UANL finally turned the tables last November, going into Banorte Stadium and earning a 33–30 victory that ended the Borregos’ 33-game winning streak and prevented them from capturing a fourth straight title.
Now the defending champions get the rematch at home.
Both teams have handled their opening three games, although they have done it in very different ways.
Monterrey offense piling up points
The Borregos have been explosive, scoring 166 points in three games — an average of 55.3 per outing.
They opened with a 49-point performance against Campus Ciudad de México, followed with 44 against Puebla and then erupted for 73 against Pumas CU.
The concern has been at the other end. Monterrey has surrendered 100 points, making Friday’s matchup against the defending champions a significant test for a defense that has yet to match the production of its offense.
Tigres defense faces biggest test
UANL has been considerably stingier.
The Tigres opened with a 49–7 win over Águilas Blancas, followed with a 31–14 victory against CCM and a 28–17 win over CEM. They have allowed only 38 points through three games, an average of 12.7 per contest.
That sets up the night’s defining matchup: a Monterrey offense averaging more than 55 points against a UANL defense allowing fewer than 13.
November implications already looming
There is plenty of football remaining, but Friday could also matter if these two programs find themselves across from one another for a fifth consecutive championship game.
Seeding and subsequent results will determine the postseason picture, but a victory would give either team an important advantage in the race for a higher seed — and potentially the opportunity to host another championship showdown.
For now, the immediate prize is simpler: an undefeated record, northern bragging rights and another chapter in one of Mexican college football’s longest-running rivalries.
