Dresden Monarchs stay unbeaten with convincing road win over Munich Cowboys

The Dresden Monarchs improved to 8-0 in the German Football League with a commanding 48-10 victory over the Munich Cowboys (5-3), extending their unbeaten season behind another explosive offensive performance and a defense that controlled the game from start to finish.

Monarchs seize early control

The Monarchs came out firing.

After Munich quarterback Nicholas Semptimphelter injured his right knee on the opening drive, quarterback Rocky Lombardi and the rest of the Monarchs offense wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Lombardi connected with Montigo Moss for the game’s first touchdown before Tofunmi Lala capped another drive with a touchdown run to make it 14-0.

The connection between Lombardi and Moss continued to torment the Cowboys in the second quarter as the receiver turned another deep pass into a touchdown. Although Moss later lost a fumble, Munich was unable to capitalize. The Monarchs instead closed the half with Lombardi finding Janne Särkelä for another touchdown and a 28-0 halftime lead.

Defense sets the tone

While the offense piled up points, Dresden’s defense made life miserable for Munich.

Semptimphelter returned after his early injury but was never able to find the rhythm that has made the Cowboys one of the league’s highest-scoring teams. The home side was held scoreless until late in the third quarter, when Maximilian Mittasch connected on a 45-yard field goal.

Gabriel Boccella finally produced a big play on a long reception, but by then the outcome had already been decided.

Complete performance

The Monarchs put the game out of reach immediately after halftime when Lala returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. Moss added his third touchdown reception of the afternoon before backup quarterback Marvin Schöne entered the game and threw a touchdown pass to David Moore III to extend the lead to 48-0.

Munich managed one late touchdown as backup quarterback Valentin Sillem connected with Christoph Sass, but it was little more than consolation in an otherwise difficult afternoon.

The victory was tempered by the loss of running back Yazan Nasser, who suffered a serious leg injury during the second quarter and was taken from the field by ambulance.

Despite that setback, the Monarchs delivered one of their most complete performances of the season, while the Cowboys showed resilience by continuing to battle until the final whistle despite facing the league’s only unbeaten team.
