Finland: East City Giants bet on championship QB Matt O’Connor for 2026 season

The East City Giants, aiming to climb from the middle of the pack, have signed American quarterback Matt O’Connor to lead their offense for the 2026 Maple League season.

Addressing a stagnant attack
The move addresses an offense that stalled in 2025. The Giants finished 6th in the eight-team league with a 2-8 record, with their offense ranking 6th in both points scored and total yards gained. The front office is betting that a new field general can provide the efficiency needed to compete.

From Hungarian champion to Finnish giant
The 6-2, 200 pound O’Connor arrives in Finland fresh off a championship-winning season in Hungary. In 2025, he led the Diósd Saints, a newly promoted team, to an unlikely HFL title. His statistics were impressive: in eight games, he threw for 2,630 yards with a 70% completion rate and 28 touchdowns, showcasing the precise and efficient passing game he’s known for.

A collegiate veteran with a precise arm
Before his professional breakout, O’Connor built his foundation in the NCAA. The native of Narberth, Pennsylvania began his college career at Villanova University before transferring to Stetson University. Described as a calm and precise pocket-passer, O’Connor is known for his excellent technique and ability to read defenses rather than mobility—traits the Giants hope will bring consistency to their attack. He is the third American import announced, joining fullback Nolan Bernat and defensive lineman Tyran Dixon, as ECG seeks a rise in the standings.
