Finland: Helsinki Roosters rally late to edge Giants and strengthen playoff hopes

The Helsinki Roosters (3-3) kept themselves firmly in the Maple League playoff race Saturday, scoring the game’s final points to defeat the East City Giants (2-6) 43-35 in an entertaining Helsinki rivalry matchup.

Late touchdown seals the win

The Roosters found themselves trailing by nine points before putting together a dramatic finish. The decisive moment came with just over a minute remaining when quarterback Ambro Urjansson connected with Rene Rautiainen on a 70-yard touchdown pass to cap the comeback and secure an important road victory.

The win gives the Roosters their third straight victory and their second triumph over the Giants this season, keeping them firmly in the hunt for a postseason berth.

Balanced offense delivers

Making his debut as offensive coordinator, Patrik Asén guided an offense that produced big plays both through the air and on the ground.

Corintheus Edmonds led the receiving corps with seven catches for 117 yards and two touchdowns, providing a reliable target throughout the game. Lassi Pajarinen powered the running game with 129 rushing yards on 20 carries and also added a touchdown reception.

Despite playing without starting running back D’Angelo Durham, the Roosters offensive line gave Urjansson time to attack downfield and helped generate a balanced offensive performance that came through when it mattered most.

Defense controls the trenches

While the offense produced the game-winning drive, the Roosters defense made life miserable for East City quarterback Norman Douglas all evening.

The defensive front recorded an incredible 10 sacks, repeatedly disrupting the Giants’ passing attack. William Lydle led the charge with 3.5 sacks and 6.5 tackles, turning in one of the most dominant defensive performances of the Maple League season.

The Giants still managed to make things interesting behind Douglas and his talented receiving group of Austin Brock, Oskari Suoniemi and Ronnie Lindroos. Sebastian Lugora added two rushing touchdowns, while Benjamin Varvas contributed 44 rushing yards on four carries.

Defensively, Kaspar Kallas finished with 7.5 tackles and Joona Sarajärvi recorded 5.5 tackles for East City.

Playoff race tightens

The victory gives the Roosters valuable momentum as they continue their climb in the Maple League standings. The combination of explosive offensive production and a relentless pass rush proved to be the difference in a game that stayed close until the final minute.

For the Giants, the loss leaves them with just two games remaining and their playoff hopes hanging by a thread after another competitive performance that ultimately ended without the result they needed.
