Finland: Kuopio Steelers blank Wasa Royals to move into second place

The Kuopio Steelers (4-2) leaned on another outstanding defensive performance to shut out the Wasa Royals (2-2) 17-0 this past weekend, moving into second place in Finland’s Maple League standings. Played in rainy conditions after a 30-minute lightning delay, the game turned into a defensive battle before the Steelers pulled away with a pair of second-half touchdowns.

Weather slows both offenses

The evening got off to an unusual start as thunderstorms forced a 30-minute delay shortly after kickoff. Although the lightning passed, steady rain remained throughout the game and made life difficult for both offenses.

Turnovers dominated the first half, with five combined giveaways, including three by the Royals. Neither offense was able to consistently move the football, and Kuopio managed the only points of the opening two quarters when Iiro Pekkarinen connected on a field goal for a 3-0 halftime lead.

The slippery conditions made the passing game especially challenging, forcing both teams to rely heavily on their defenses and running attacks.

Mack breaks through

The game finally opened up after halftime as Joshua Mack helped the Steelers take control.

Mack scored both Kuopio touchdowns on the ground while carrying the ball 17 times for 54 rushing yards. He also remained heavily involved in the passing game, catching seven passes for 44 yards.

Quarterback Slade Jarman completed 16 of 28 passes for 173 yards despite the difficult weather, with Isaak Marshall leading the receiving corps with six catches for 87 yards. Mauri Rantalankila added two receptions for 24 yards as the Steelers did enough offensively to capitalize on excellent field position throughout the second half.

Defense dominates again

As impressive as the offense was late, the story of the game belonged to the Steelers defense.

The Royals were held scoreless and managed only 88 passing yards and 53 rushing yards. Returning quarterback Alexander Abbott completed 10 of 29 passes for 88 yards and was intercepted three times by Lars Steffen, Akseli Syrjänen and Iiro Pekkarinen.

The pressure never let up. Henri Hietajärvi, Lauri Saastamoinen and Jani Lindqvist each recorded a sack, while Mario Siitonen led the defense with 4.5 tackles and also forced one of Kuopio’s takeaways.

For the Royals, Karim Limam recorded an interception and Raul Khalifa led the team with five tackles as the defense kept the visitors within striking distance for much of the night.

Steelers keep climbing

The victory lifts the Kuopio Steelers into second place in the Maple League standings as they continue to build momentum heading into next week’s matchup against the Tampere Saints.

In difficult weather conditions, the Steelers proved once again that they can win in different ways. While the offense found enough big plays after halftime, it was the relentless defense that set the tone from start to finish and delivered one of the club’s most complete performances of the season.
