Finland: Porvoon Butchers look to sweep East City Giants in Maple League rematch

The Porvoon Butchers (4-2) host the East City Giants (2-6) Friday night in a Finnish Maple League matchup that carries major playoff implications for the defending champions, who escaped with a 34-32 victory when the teams met earlier this season.

With the regular season winding down, the Butchers remain in the hunt for home-field advantage in the semifinals. The Giants, meanwhile, are effectively out of the playoff race but have already shown they can make life difficult for the league’s top teams.

Butchers looking for consistency

Unlike last season’s dominant run, Porvoon has spent much of 2026 playing tight games. Four of its past five have been decided by no more than a field goal, with two ending in defeats.

Offense hasn’t been the major concern. The Butchers have scored the second-most points in the league while producing more yards than any other team. Christian Powell remains a central part of that offense, and Friday will also bring the debut of American receiver Keith Coffee.

Coffee played earlier this season for the Firenze Red Lions in the American Football League Europe after finishing his college career at Mars Hill University. He replaces Isaiah Grice, who had been brought in following JJ Jones’ injury.

Changes on Porvoon defense

The bigger questions surround the Butchers defense. Charlie Ovey, who arrives from Kotka, takes over as defensive coordinator following the departure of Noam Calvache.

His first assignment comes without Jesse Vuoksenturja, a key presence in the middle of the defense who will miss Friday’s game.

That unit will face a Giants offense led by Norman Douglas. Despite being sacked 10 times against the Helsinki Roosters last week, Douglas has developed a connection with his receiving corps and gives East City the ability to challenge defenses through the air.

With their postseason chances all but gone, the Giants have little to lose in their penultimate game.

Establishing a running game remains an issue. Sebastian Lugora has battled through physical problems, which could mean another expanded role for Benjamin Varvas.

The greater challenge will be slowing a productive Porvoo offense. The first meeting showed just how close East City can push the defending champions. This time, however, the Butchers need more than another escape. With playoff positioning at stake, Friday offers Porvoo an opportunity to take another important step toward securing a home semifinal.
