Italy: Firenze Guelfi stay unbeaten with 48-24 victory over Legnano Frogs

The Firenze Guelfi (7-0) continued their impressive run in the Italian Football League by defeating the Legnano Frogs (5-2) 48-24 in Week 12. Played under sweltering conditions, this matchup showcased the Guelfi’s offensive firepower and solidified their position at the top of the standings.

Fast-paced start

The game kicked off with an electric pace, highlighted by an early interception from Saad Ali of the Frogs. However, a fumble soon after gave the ball back to the Guelfi, who capitalized on the mistake with a rushing touchdown from quarterback Andrea Fimiani. Fimiani quickly added another score, putting Firenze ahead 14-0.

The Frogs responded in the second quarter with a touchdown from Luke Caliendo, who caught a 15-yard pass from quarterback Josh Taylor. Caliendo then converted the extra point himself, narrowing the gap to 14-7. But the Guelfi struck back, scoring again before Caliendo added a 25-yard field goal, bringing the score to 34-10 at halftime after another turnover favored Firenze.

Second half struggles

As the second half began, the Guelfi scored another touchdown, extending their lead. The Frogs fought back with a beautiful 40-yard touchdown pass from Taylor to Caliendo, who converted the extra point to make it 41-24. However, the Guelfi quickly found the end zone again, showcasing their relentless offense.

In the final moments, Alessandro Zerbo took over for the Frogs and connected with Niccolò Pulsinelli for a late touchdown, finalizing the score at 48-24.

Looking ahead

After the game, Frogs head coach Cody Kent acknowledged the strength of the Guelfi, stating, “Firenze is a very strong team, and they showed it again today. Their offensive pace is difficult to manage.” He expressed disappointment in his team’s performance, particularly regarding the three fumbles that hindered their chances. However, he noted improvements in special teams, including their first field goal of the season.

With this victory, the Guelfi secured the #1 seed for the playoffs, while the Frogs will need to regroup and address their mistakes as they prepare for a final showdown with the Parma Panthers to decide who gets a first round bye alongside Firenze.
