College football back in action in Mexico

The full college football schedule was back in Mexico last weekend following the postponement of a large number due to the devastating earthquakes which struck Mexico. Both the  ONEFA – Organización Nacional Estudiantil de Futbol Americano (National Student Organization of American Football) – league and  CONADEIP, Comisión Nacional Deportiva Estudiantil de Instituciones Privadas, A.C. (private university league),were in action.

After the suspension of most of the games as teams pitched in to help in the aftermath of the earthquakes, there were displays of unity at all the national football games.

The action began Friday afternoon, when the Pumas UNAM Acatlán, hosted the Toros Salvajes of the UACH and both teams entered the field together, united.

The Los Pumas Acatlán took the lead early and held it forcing the Toros, to make a quarterback switch. It did not help as the Pumas won easily 35-6.

The best game of the week was staged by the UVM Linces who received the Burros Blancos of the IPN, game that was decided until the last play, when the Linces missed a field goal of 37 yards that would have forced overtime. The Burros got their third consecutive win, 20-17, keeping their playoff hopes alive in the Green Conference.

On Saturday, the action continued in Querétaro, when the visiting UAEM Potros beat the home Anahuac Leones 28-7.

In the city of Puebla, the Wolves of the BUAP were defeated by the Sentinels CGP 24-14.

In Ciudad Victoria Tamaulipas, in a game that was expected to be closer, the Correcaminos (Road Runners) of the UAT, beat the Tecos UAG 41-14. The Tecos were missing their outstanding QB Misael Salas who had been sidelined the week before with a shoulder injury.

The duel of Águilas Blancas IPN vs Tigres UANL had to be canceled, by order of Mexico City since all the major events in the city were canceled, to be rescheduled for November 4.

In the city of Saltillo, there was another gesture of brotherhood, as in the other games, both teams entered the field united.

In very entertaining game,  the Frailes of the UT played well for a time but ended up falling to the Wolves UAC 31-19.

Another entertaining game was staged in the city of Cuernavaca, as the Correcaminos UAT Reynosa defeated the Tlahuicas 22-13.

In Chihuahua, Pumas UNAM entered the UACH Aguilas Stadium and took an important step in a vital game for the playoffs aspirations of both teams. Again the QB of the UNAM, Dejuanbels was outstanding and the defense played extremely well giving the Pumas a 24-14 win.

To finalize the fifth round of play in the ONEFA, the Halcones of the UV easily defeated the Leones Negros of the UdeG 64-0.

In the CONADEIP, the most interesting game was between the UABC Cimarrones and the Zorros CETYS Mexicali. Mexicali beat the Cimarrones 28-20, a game that puts  the Cimarrones playoff hopes at risk with their record of 1-2.

In the game of the Independence group, the UDLA Aztecs gave an account of the Borregos de Puebla, in a Puebla rivalry, the game kept the public entertained as it was a game of many points, in the end Aztecas won 53-39.

In other games, the Borregos Querétaro defeated the Lobos UTH 41-20 and the Potros ITSON downed the CETYS Tijuana 40-13.
