German Football League rankings have a new leader

The German Football League season has reached its midpoint, and several familiar contenders are beginning to separate themselves from the rest of the field.

The Dresden Monarchs claimed the top spot in this week’s rankings after a 24-22 road victory over the Potsdam Royals, handing the defending champions their first loss of the season. The Royals slip to second, while the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns strengthened their case as title contenders with a dominant 28-0 shutout of the Ravensburg Razorbacks. Meanwhile, the Hildesheim Invaders remain among the league’s elite despite their recent loss to Potsdam.

1. Dresden Monarchs (7-0)

Dresden pulled off the biggest win of the season so far, defeating Potsdam 24-22 on the road to remain unbeaten. Winning in Potsdam is never easy, and the victory solidifies the Monarchs as the team to beat.

2. Potsdam Royals (5-1)

The defending champions suffered their first setback of the season against Dresden, but they remain one of the league’s most complete teams and should continue to be a major championship contender.

3. Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns (6-0)

The Unicorns continue to look every bit like title contenders. Following a 52-27 victory over the Munich Cowboys, they blanked the Ravensburg Razorbacks 28-0, showcasing one of the league’s best defenses.

4. Hildesheim Invaders (5-1)

The Invaders’ game against the Berlin Rebels was postponed due to extreme heat. Their most recent outing was a 44-21 loss to Potsdam, but they remain firmly among the GFL’s top teams.

5. Pforzheim Wilddogs (6-1)

The Wilddogs continue to build momentum behind one of the league’s stingiest defenses. Back-to-back convincing wins over the Allgäu Comets (61-13 and 35-0) have positioned Pforzheim as a dangerous team heading into the second half of the season.

6. Munich Cowboys (4-2)

The Cowboys remain competitive despite two losses to Schwäbisch Hall. Munich has shown plenty of offensive firepower but must find more consistency against the league’s elite.

7. Düsseldorf Panther (2-4)

The Panther have won two of their last three games, defeating the Saarland Hurricanes 16-14 and the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes 14-7. Momentum is building, but a difficult stretch of games now awaits.

8. Ravensburg Razorbacks (3-3)

After opening the season with two straight wins, the Razorbacks have dropped three of their last four, including a 28-0 shutout loss to Schwäbisch Hall. Even so, their remaining schedule gives them a realistic opportunity to secure a playoff berth.

9. Braunschweig Lions (2-5)

It has been a difficult season for one of Germany’s most successful clubs. Heavy losses to Dresden and Potsdam exposed plenty of weaknesses, but the recent 55-28 victory over the Straubing Spiders offered a positive step forward.

10. Berlin Rebels (1-3)

The Rebels have faced arguably the toughest schedule in the league, with losses to Potsdam, Dresden, and Schwäbisch Hall. However, their 23-17 victory over Pforzheim proved they are capable of competing with anyone.

11. Regensburg Phoenix (1-4)

The Phoenix have battled a challenging schedule and are coming off an encouraging 23-16 victory over the Düsseldorf Panther. They’ll look to build on that momentum in the weeks ahead.

12. Kiel Baltic Hurricanes (1-5)

The Baltic Hurricanes have lost five straight, including a 42-7 defeat to Dresden. Their upcoming rematch with the Düsseldorf Panther is an important opportunity to turn things around after falling 14-7 three weeks ago.

13. Saarland Hurricanes (1-5)

The Hurricanes’ only victory came against the winless Straubing Spiders, but their narrow 16-14 loss to the Düsseldorf Panther showed they remain competitive. Their upcoming matchup against the Braunschweig Lions could be pivotal.

14. Allgäu Comets (1-5)

The Comets have allowed a league-high 48.6 points per game and have struggled throughout the season. Their lone victory, a 24-20 win over the Straubing Spiders, keeps them out of last place. Despite a difficult schedule that included losses to Hildesheim and Ravensburg, Allgäu still has enough talent to become more competitive down the stretch.

15. Straubing Spiders (0-6)

The Spiders remain winless after a 55-28 loss to the Braunschweig Lions. Aside from their close defeat to the Allgäu Comets, they have struggled to stay competitive and face a difficult second half as they try to avoid the relegation round.
