Germany: Berlin Adler re-sign QB Zach Cavanaugh

The Berlin Adler in the German Football League have re-signed quarterback Zach Cavanaugh for the 2022 season.

Cavanaugh helped the Adler earn promotion to the GFL after an outstanding 2021 season in GFL2.

The 35-year-old Cavanaugh threw for 2,362 yards and 31 touchdowns in the Adler’s nine games, averaging 262.4 yards per game. The Adler finished first in the very tough GFL2 North division with an 8-0-1 record.

Against the Rostock Griffins on June 26, Cavanaugh enjoyed his best day, throwing for 392 yards and five touchdowns in the Adler’s 42-35 season opening win.

This will mark Cavanaugh’s ninth season in Germany. Before suiting up for Berlin in 2019, he played quarterback for the Hildesheim Invaders (2016-17), Paderborn Dolphins (2015), Troisdorf Jets (2014) and Cottbus Crayfish (2013) in Germany’s Div 2 and 3. He spent the 2018 season behind center for the Ljubljana Silverhawks in the Austrian Football League, finishing as the top passer in the AFL after throwing for 3,259 yards and 33 touchdowns. He also finished as the fourth leading rusher in the AFL that season after averaging 66 yards per game.

The 6’2″, 185-pound Cavanaugh from Marshfield, Massachusetts, finished his college career with the Curry College Colonels (NCAA Div. III) in Milton, Massachusetts.

Cavanaugh, who now resides in Berlin, is also the head coach of the Berlin Adler GFL Junior team serving as offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, and special teams coordinator. He guided the young Adler squad to the GFL Junior North division title in both 2019 and 2021.
