Germany: Dresden Monarchs stay unbeaten after holding off Panther 30-20

The Dresden Monarchs (9-0) survived a determined challenge from the Düsseldorf Panther (3-5) on Saturday, rallying after briefly surrendering the lead to earn a hard-fought 30-20 victory and remain unbeaten in German Football League play.

Fast start gives Dresden early control

The Monarchs wasted little time putting the home crowd at Heinz Steyer Stadium on its feet. Less than two minutes into the game, quarterback Rocky Lombardi connected with Montigo Moss, who turned the catch into a 63-yard touchdown. Florian Finke’s extra point made it 7-0.

Moments later, Dresden took advantage of a Panther turnover deep in Düsseldorf territory. Lombardi finished the short drive himself with a 16-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 14-0.

Panther battle back

The visitors settled in after the slow start behind newly signed quarterback Dawson Herl. He capped an 81-yard drive with a touchdown pass to Sven Appelt to get the Panther on the board before finding James Okike for a 34-yard touchdown late in the half. The successful two-point conversion tied the game at 14-14.

The Monarchs regained the lead just before halftime as Finke drilled a field goal to send Dresden into the locker room ahead 17-14.

Early in the third quarter, Jurriente Davis intercepted Lombardi, and the Panthers capitalized when Herl connected with Okike again on a six-yard touchdown pass. Although the extra point failed, Düsseldorf had its first lead of the afternoon at 20-17.

Monarchs answer the challenge

The response came quickly. Lombardi marched the Monarchs back down the field and found Moss for his second touchdown reception of the game to restore the lead at 24-20.

Finke later added a field goal to push the advantage to seven points before the Dresden defense delivered the game’s decisive play. Logan Mobelini forced Herl into a mistake, and Sterling May recovered the loose ball to end the Panthers’ comeback hopes.

Finke’s third field goal closed out the scoring at 30-20.

Defense delivers late

Despite difficult conditions caused by steady rain and a slippery field, the Monarchs found a way to stay perfect. Lombardi accounted for three touchdowns, Moss caught two scoring passes, and Finke contributed three field goals.

The victory keeps Dresden unbeaten at 9-0 heading into next week’s trip to face the Berlin Rebels, while the Panthers left with another loss but showed they can compete with one of the GFL’s top teams.
