Germany overwhelms Hungary in U19 European Championship opener

Germany showed no mercy against a Hungary team making its IFAF U19s European Championships debut with a 79-6 Group C win at Enthroners Field in Szekesfehervar.

Strong start for Germany
A 14-0 halftime lead was opened up by Moritz Hansh recovering the ball in the end zone after a snap over the punter’s head and quarterback Lennart Thoma rolling out to the right to hit Friedrich Koch, who broke tackles on a 29-yard scoring grab. Kicker Paul Jonathan Krause made the first of his nine extra points. Thoma scored on a keeper then hit Koch in the end zone again for a 27-0 lead, which was extended by a two-point Janik Luca Bergmann pass to Johannes Klein.

Hungary finds the end zone
Hungary put their only points of the game on the board as Lóránt Emhő evaded pressure and a sack to sling a pinpoint sidearm pass 8 yards to Szabolcs Kovács in the end zone, and the PAT was blocked. Thoma rushed for a touchdown before Hansh came up with an interception returned to the Hungary 9-yard mark, as Emhő made a saving tackle having thrown the pick. Thoma connected with Tyler Matthiessen on the next play for a touchdown, and Germany led 43-6.

Ruthless finish
Clinton Nnamchi extended the advantage to 44 points with a rushing score, and Germany continued to be ruthless on the ground in the fourth quarter. Nnamchi produced a 73-yard touchdown run down the right side, and an interception by Mathis Borgmann led to Marc Antonio Hernandez Fernandez racing 50 yards down the left sideline. Nico Nussmann’s run completed the scoring after he had come in at quarterback to throw a touchdown to Maximilion Musiol and then hit a diving Ermin Sadikovic for a successful two-point play.
