Germany: Potsdam Royals sign ex Cincinnati Bengals coach Paul Alexander as offensive consultant

The Potsdam Royals from the German Football League have added a huge boost to their coaching staff  with the signing of long-time offensive line coach of the Cincinnati Bengals, Paul Alexander.

Alexander, who Sports Illustrated named as a member of the “Ulimate NFL Coaching Staff” in 2016, is joining the Royals as an offensive consultant for the 2019 season.

Sports Illustrated:

“He should be talked about in the same breath as legendary line coaches like Howard Mudd and Alex Gibbs.”

One of the longest-tenured assistants in the NFL, Alexander was the Bengals’ offensive line coach 1994 until 2017, and was named assistant head coach in 2003. He served under four different head coaches for the Bengals, and his lines blocked for four different running backs with 1,000-yard seasons. Cincinnati’s line under Alexander was ranked among the top 10 in fewest sacks allowed totals in five of the last seven NFL seasons,  and it set franchise records for low quarterback takedowns in two different seasons before that.

Alexander spent part of the 2018 season with the Dallas Cowboys.

Paul Alexander on joining Potsdam:

“I’m really excited to join the efforts of the Potsdam Royals as they prepare for the 2019 season. It’s an honor to consult and share my experiences from the National Football League with the players and the coaching staff”.

Alexander began his career at Penn State University before moving to the NFL through the University of Michigan, initially as a tight ends  coach with the New York Jets. His next stop was then for 23 years the Bengals, mainly as an offensive line coach but also as assistant head coach.

He has gained a reputation for his innovative thinking. This is an excerpt from his book “Perform”. He used a ketchup bottle as one of his criteria for picking offensive linemen!

Coach Alexander, who is currently taking a break from coaching in the NFL, will join the Royals at the end of March.
