Germany: Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns overpower Munich Cowboys 52-27 in season opener
The Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns (1-0) kicked off their effect® ENERGY GFL 2026 season with a commanding 52-27 victory over the Munich Cowboys (0-1) at Dantestadion in Munich, highlighted by three pick-six touchdowns (!) from their defense. The Unicorns showcased their dominance, particularly in the first half, where they built a commanding lead that set the tone for the entire game.
Strong start for the Unicorns
From the opening whistle, the Unicorns made their intentions clear. Just two minutes into the game, running back Kelley Joiner broke free for a 37-yard touchdown run, putting Schwäbisch Hall up 7-0 after the extra point by Toni Trefzer. The Cowboys attempted to respond with a long drive, but their efforts were thwarted by a failed field goal attempt, leaving them scoreless early on.
The Unicorns continued to apply pressure, with Joiner scoring again on a 5-yard run to extend the lead to 14-0. As the first quarter progressed, the Cowboys struggled to find their rhythm, while the Unicorns capitalized on every opportunity. Quarterback Lars Heidrich connected with Julius Klenk for a 26-yard touchdown pass, pushing the score to 21-0.
Defensive dominance
The Unicorns defense was relentless, forcing turnovers and stifling the Cowboys offense. Jordan Toles made a spectacular play, intercepting a pass and returning it 48 yards for a touchdown, making it 28-0. The Cowboys finally got on the board just before halftime with a 37-yard field goal from Maximilian Mittasch, but they trailed 28-3 at the break.
Head coach Felix Brenner praised his defense after the game, highlighting their ability to score three defensive touchdowns. “It’s a strong sign from the defense that we put a pick six on the board three times over the entire game,” he said.
Unicorns keep the momentum
The second half began with the Unicorns maintaining their control. Although Trefzer missed a 36-yard field goal attempt, Monteze Latimore intercepted a pass and returned it 30 yards for another touchdown, extending the lead to 34-3. The Cowboys managed to respond with a touchdown pass from Nicolas Semptimphelter to Gabriel Boccella, narrowing the gap to 34-10.
However, the Unicorns quickly countered. Mathis Harang scored on a short run, and Latimore struck again with another interception return for a touchdown, making it 47-10. The Cowboys managed to score again in the final quarter, with Mustafa Othmann-Khaldun rushing for a touchdown, but the Unicorns answered with a safety after a bad snap, sealing the game at 52-27.
Looking ahead
Despite the loss, the Cowboys showed flashes of potential, particularly with Boccella’s two touchdown receptions. Head coach Christos Lambropoulos acknowledged the need for improvement, stating, “It was a good test right at the beginning of the season. We know what adjustments we have to make.”
The Unicorns, on the other hand, demonstrated their readiness for the season and will look to build on this momentum as they continue their campaign. With a strong performance on both sides of the ball, they are poised to be serious contenders for the southern title once again.
