GFL Bowl 2026: More than 20,000 set to pack Dresden for title game

Dresden is getting ready for a party.

With just two days remaining until the GFL Bowl 2026, more than 20,000 tickets have already been sold for Saturday’s German championship game between the Dresden Monarchs and Potsdam Royals at Rudolf Harbig Stadium.

And while the championship game is the centerpiece, the buildup in Dresden is another indication of how far Germany’s biggest American football event has come.

Bowl fever building in Dresden

The 20,000-ticket mark has already been passed, prompting organizers to open additional seating at Rudolf Harbig Stadium.

The size of the expected crowd is particularly significant with the championship being held in Dresden for only the second consecutive year.

Stadium managing director Ronald Tschernig is hoping Saturday pushes the event even further.

“I hope for a new record for the GFL and our stadium,” he said at Tuesday’s official GFL Bowl press conference.

Dresden Lord Mayor Dirk Hilbert is already looking ahead.

“I would be happy if the GFL Bowl took place again in Dresden in 2027.”

German football gathers for championship weekend

The GFL Bowl has become more than a championship game, with the weekend bringing together the wider German American football community.

Friday’s program includes the German football Hall of Fame and GFL Honors, recognizing the leading performers from the 2026 season. A Flag Junior Bowl is also part of the championship weekend.

The forecast is cooperating as well, with sunshine and temperatures around 20 C expected in Dresden.

Dresden embracing the Bowl

The Bowl’s return for a second straight year has strengthened the connection between the championship and Dresden.

Asked whether the city has become the “Home of GFL Bowl,” league representative Axel Streich said:

“At least at the moment – and we’re happy about that. The offer means that football fans from all over Germany are now coming to Dresden.”

The hometown Monarchs have helped fuel that momentum, drawing nearly 47,000 spectators to their home games this season.

“We have worked for this location for 35 years and we are very proud of that,” Sören Glöckner said.

More than 20,000 and counting

The Dresden Monarchs and Potsdam Royals kick off Saturday at 18:00 CEST (12 noon ET).
