GFL: Munich Cowboys sign American WR Lorenzo Thompson

The Munich Cowboys have announced that they have signed American wide receiver Lorenzo Thompson ahead of the 2023 German Football League season.

Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Thompson spent time from 2018 to 2019 at the Division 1 FCS level with Hampton University in Virginia.  With the Pirates, he racked up 12 catches for 169 yards and one touchdown.  He returned to football in the 2022 season after signing with the Biberach Beavers, a small team in southern Germany.  Thompson quickly proved to be an outstanding offensive weapon for the Beavers, but his season was unfortunately cut short due to a shoulder injury.

A lanky receiver at 6’3”, 194 pounds, Thompson has the athleticism to be an instant playmaker for the Cowboys, who plan to use him both on the outside and in the slot.  Thompson joins a Munich team that was among the GFL’s best teams last season.  After finishing the regular season with a record of 8-1-1, the team advanced to the playoffs, but were knocked out in the first round by the Cologne Crocodiles.  The Cowboys’ offense was not particularly strong, as they finished the season ranked 10th out of 16 teams in both scoring and passing yards, so they are hoping Thompson will help their aerial attack become more potent.

Cowboys offensive coordinator Justin Sottilare:

“We worked out our requirement profile in detail and found the right player in Lorenzo Thompson. In addition to athleticism, Lorenzo also has the understanding as a team leader. His versatility will support us a lot.”
