Hildesheim Invaders rout Braunschweig Lions 50-15, clinch playoff berth

The Hildesheim Invaders (6-2) turned a tight first half into a dominant 50-15 victory over the Braunschweig Lions (3-7) Saturday night, completing a season sweep of their Lower Saxony rivals and clinching a German Football League playoff berth.

Playing before 2,983 spectators at Friedrich-Ebert-Stadion, the Invaders led only 15-7 at halftime before taking complete control after the break. Nelson Hughes III threw four touchdown passes, while the Hildesheim defense recorded six sacks and kept the Lions scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Defenses set the early tone

Neither offense could get much going in a scoreless opening quarter as penalties repeatedly interrupted the flow of the game. Braunschweig had an opportunity to strike first, but Mark Peschelt’s field goal attempt was blocked.

The Invaders finally broke through in the second quarter when Hughes capped a drive with a two-yard touchdown run.

Ryon Thomas answered for the Lions, scoring from one yard out to tie the game at 7-7. But Hildesheim regained control before halftime when Hughes connected with Paul Terjung for a 29-yard touchdown. A successful two-point conversion sent the hosts into the break leading 15-7.

Invaders explode after halftime

The game changed quickly in the third quarter.

Matti Probst broke loose for a 27-yard touchdown run to push Hildesheim’s advantage to 22-7. Thomas responded again, racing 19 yards for his second touchdown before finding Jonathan ter Horst on the two-point conversion to cut the margin to 22-15.

The Invaders answered immediately.

Hughes hit Terjung for a 46-yard touchdown, and the pair struck again later in the quarter from 11 yards out. Suddenly, a seven-point game had become a 36-15 Hildesheim lead.

Hildesheim closes the door

There was no way back for Braunschweig in the fourth quarter.

Hughes threw his fourth touchdown pass, finding Lennart Stukenborg from five yards out, before Probst added his second score on a two-yard run to complete the 50-15 victory.

Hughes finished 14 of 18 for 241 yards and four touchdowns as the Invaders generated 448 total yards, including 207 on the ground. The Hildesheim defense was just as impressive, holding Braunschweig to 227 total yards while recording six sacks and forcing two turnovers. Ryon Thomas threw for just 95 yards and a touchdown, although he did most of the Lions’ damage on the ground with two rushing touchdowns.

The win completed Hildesheim’s season sweep after its 31-27 victory in the first meeting and officially secured a playoff berth. The Invaders now face their biggest test of the season with a road game against the unbeaten Dresden Monarchs next Sunday.
