NJCAA: Hutchinson blanks No. 1 Iowa Western in historic 26-0 victory
The Hutchinson Blue Dragons (5-0) delivered their biggest statement of the season Saturday, shutting out the top-ranked Iowa Western Reivers (3-1) 26-0 at Gowans Stadium as the NJCAA Division I No. 2 team knocked off the nation’s No. 1 team.
It was the third consecutive shutout for Hutchinson, the first time the Blue Dragons have accomplished that since 1950, and their first shutout of Iowa Western in series history.
Dragons strike first
Hutchinson grabbed the lead on its second possession, marching 67 yards in eight plays.
Randy Phillips connected with Jeremiah Looney for 39 yards to put the Blue Dragons in position before finding Devin Voltaire for an eight-yard touchdown in the right corner of the end zone.
The offense went quiet in the second quarter, failing to produce a first down, but the Hutchinson defense refused to give an inch.
Iowa Western drove to the Blue Dragons’ 19, but linebacker Jack Sells stopped the Reivers on fourth-and-two to end the threat.
Then special teams delivered. Aiden Bruce ripped off a 50-yard punt return to the Iowa Western 32 with five seconds remaining, and Parker Grizzell drilled a 49-yard field goal as time expired for a 10-0 halftime lead.
Phillips and Poole deliver the knockout
Grizzell stretched the advantage to 13-0 with a 42-yard field goal early in the third quarter before Phillips supplied the game’s biggest offensive play.
Taking over at their own 27, the Blue Dragons wasted no time. Phillips went deep to Nakai Poole on the first snap, and Poole took it the distance for a 73-yard touchdown and a 19-0 lead.
Poole finished with career highs of five catches and 128 yards. Phillips completed 17 of 31 passes for 273 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, while Looney added five receptions for 84 yards.
After managing nothing offensively in the second quarter, Hutchinson exploded for 159 yards in the third.
Defense makes history
The Blue Dragons defense kept hammering away at the other end.
Marcus Dawson intercepted a pass late in the third quarter, and Hutchinson turned the takeaway into a 54-yard scoring drive. Bravin Powell finished it by sneaking into the end zone to make it 26-0.
Sells led the defense with a career-high 12 tackles, while Jawon Springs added nine. Hutchinson forced three turnovers and stopped Iowa Western on downs three times.
The Reivers were held to a season-low 276 yards and crossed into Hutchinson territory on only four possessions. Their two trips into the red zone both ended on failed fourth-down attempts.
Shutout streak reaches three
The victory extended a remarkable defensive run for the Blue Dragons.
After blanking Garden City 70-0 and Butler 24-0, Hutchinson has now gone 14 consecutive quarters without allowing a point and 18 straight without surrendering a touchdown.
It is only the third time in program history the Blue Dragons have recorded three consecutive shutouts, joining the 1936 and 1950 teams.
The win was also Hutchinson’s sixth straight regular-season victory over Iowa Western and the third time in program history the Blue Dragons have defeated the nation’s No. 1-ranked team.
For a team that entered Saturday ranked one spot behind the Reivers, 26 unanswered points and another suffocating defensive performance made quite a statement.
