IFAF European Championship semifinal spots on the line in decisive weekend of action
The road to the 2027 IFAF Men’s European Championship semifinals reaches a critical junction this weekend, with five games across the continent set to settle the remaining Level 1 group winners and provide another measuring stick for the developing nations at Level 2.
Switzerland has already punched its ticket to the final four, leaving defending champion Austria, five-time winner Finland, and three-time champion Italy among the traditional powers fighting to join them. With the competition’s history stretching back to 1983, there is no shortage of pedigree on display — but reputation alone won’t be enough to survive the weekend.
Austria faces Turkish test in Vienna
Defending champion Austria (1–0) hosts Türkiye (1–0) at Wiener Sport Club Stadion in Vienna on Sunday, October 25, with Group A supremacy and a semifinal berth at stake.
The Austrians opened their title defense by dismantling Belgium 70–0, but the Turks were scarcely less convincing in a 60–9 victory over the same opponent.
Both teams have demonstrated considerable offensive firepower, setting up what could be the weekend’s most explosive matchup.
Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. CET.
Finland and Great Britain renew historic ambitions
Finland welcomes Great Britain to MUP Stadion in Vantaa on Saturday, October 24, with Group B’s semifinal berth going directly to the winner.
The Finns have captured five European championships, including four straight between 1993 and 2000, but finished runners-up to Austria in both 2023 and 2025.
Head coach Mikko Koikkalainen believes his squad combines veteran leadership with promising young talent, particularly at running back, while boasting a formidable defensive front.
Great Britain, European champion in 1989 and 1991, will be making its 50th men’s international appearance.
For head coach Kevin Keohane, the occasion carries personal significance. He earned his first national team cap as a player in Finland and now returns for his debut as head coach.
Kickoff is 2 p.m. local time (1 p.m. CET).
Italy and Hungary battle for Group C
Italy (1–0) hosts Hungary (1–0) at Vigorelli Stadium in Milan on Saturday in another winner-takes-all encounter.
The Italians, European champions in 1983, 1987 and 2021, opened with a hard-fought 21–14 victory over Poland.
Hungary also edged the Poles, winning 14–10, suggesting another closely contested matchup.
Kickoff is 6 p.m. CET.
Czech Republic and Denmark seek consolation
With Switzerland (2–0) already securing Group D following victories over the Czech Republic and Denmark, Saturday’s meeting at Spartak Prerov will determine second place.
The Czech Republic narrowly lost 11–9 to the Swiss, while Denmark suffered a 64–0 defeat.
Kickoff is 1 p.m. CET.
Spain looks to underline Level 2 credentials
At Level 2, Spain (1–0) hosts Georgia (0–1) at Municipal Football Field in Jaca on Saturday.
The Spaniards opened with a 59–0 demolition of the Great Britain Development Team, which had previously defeated Georgia 61–0 in Tbilisi.
Head coach Fernández Pino believes Spanish football possesses the talent and coaching infrastructure to compete at a considerably higher level.
For Georgia, making its first international road appearance, the game represents another important step in its development.
Kickoff is 5 p.m. CET.
The European Championship competition resumes in August and October 2027, when the battle for continental supremacy continues.
