IFAF World Flag 2026: European heavyweights face Panama challenge in Men’s Group D
Italy, France, Great Britain and Panama make up one of the deepest groups at the IFAF World Flag Football Championships set for Düsseldorf, with three European contenders joined by a Panama team that has already shown it can make a run on the world stage.
The group features the fourth- and fifth-ranked nations in the world in Italy and France, while Great Britain comes in off a strong European campaign and Panama brings the pedigree of a 2021 world championship bronze medal.
Italy arrives as European champion
Italy enters the tournament with plenty of confidence after winning the Euro Flag 2025 title. The Italians eliminated Great Britain in the semifinals before going on to claim the championship and now return to the world stage looking to build on that run.
There is also some unfinished business with France. At the 2024 IFAF World Championships, the French edged Italy 46-40 in the fifth-place game.
Quarterback Luke Zahradka described Italy’s approach as patient but aggressive when opportunities appear.
“Our main identity, I would say, is just picking teams apart, taking what they give us, and then when there’s an opportunity, we’re not afraid to go deep.”
Italy has reached the world championship podium twice, winning bronze in 2010 and again in 2014 on home soil.
France brings championship history
Few nations can match France’s history in this tournament.
The French won the world title in 2006, defeating Denmark 46-32 in the championship game, after previously earning bronze medals in 2002 and 2004. Another bronze followed in 2008.
More recently, France eliminated Great Britain 37-36 at the 2024 World Championships and then beat the British again in the bronze medal game at Euro Flag 2025.
Great Britain looking to take another step
Great Britain rebounded from a 10th-place finish at the 2024 World Championships with a much stronger showing at Euro Flag 2025.
GB finished second in group play, defeated Denmark in the knockout round and reached the semifinals before falling to eventual champion Italy. A narrow loss to host France in the bronze medal game left the British fourth overall.
That run showed that Great Britain belongs in the conversation with Europe’s best.
Panama remains dangerous
Panama is the wildcard in Group D.
The Central American nation produced its best world championship finish in 2021, earning bronze after defeating Italy 45-40. That remains Panama’s only medal at an IFAF World Championship.
The 2024 tournament was less successful, with Panama finishing 13th after being eliminated by eventual bronze medalist Switzerland in the Round of 16.
With Italy, France and Great Britain all carrying recent European success, Group D offers almost no margin for error. Panama’s past success only makes the race even tighter.
