Pittsburgh DB Jalen Ramsey ejected for punching Ja’Marr Chase in Steelers’ victory
In a heated matchup, Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back Jalen Ramsey was ejected for throwing a punch at Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase during the fourth quarter of Pittsburgh’s 34-12 victory on Sunday. The incident occurred with just over 12 minutes remaining in the game, escalating tensions between the two players.
The incident unfolds
The altercation began when Chase appeared to spit at Ramsey, prompting the defensive back to retaliate with a punch. A field-level view captured by FOX 19 WXIX-TV seemingly confirmed Ramsey’s claim, showing spit coming from Chase’s mouth just before the punch was thrown. After the game, Ramsey expressed his frustration, stating, “He spit on me. I don’t give a f— about football after that, respectfully.” He emphasized that while he enjoys the competitive banter on the field, crossing the line with spitting was unacceptable.
Chase, however, denied the accusation, asserting, “I ain’t ever opened my mouth to that guy. I didn’t spit on nobody.” When asked about Ramsey’s reaction, Chase suggested that his words during their back-and-forth exchanges may have provoked Ramsey.
NFL review and referee comments
The NFL is expected to review the incident, as confirmed by a league spokesman. Referee Bill Vinovich stated in a pool report that the game officials did not witness Chase spitting on Ramsey, saying, “We did not see anything that rose to that level at all.” This lack of evidence may complicate any potential disciplinary actions against either player.
Tensions escalate on the field
The confrontation was not an isolated incident; both players had been flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct just moments before the punch. Ramsey had accused Chase of attempting a crackback block, which added fuel to the fire. After the first penalties, the two continued to exchange words, leading to the explosive moment that resulted in Ramsey’s ejection.
Ramsey was escorted off the field by a Steelers staffer, with offensive lineman Broderick Jones attempting to calm him down. This ejection marked only the second time in Ramsey’s career that he has been thrown out of a game, the first occurring in 2017 while he was with the Jacksonville Jaguars against the Bengals.
Impact on the Steelers
Ramsey’s ejection came at a critical time, as he had just shifted back to the slot corner position due to an injury to Brandin Echols. The Steelers were already playing without starting cornerback Darius Slay, who is currently in the concussion protocol. As the team moves forward, they will need to address the fallout from this incident and ensure that their defensive strategy remains intact for the upcoming games.
