Japan: Panasonic Impulse steamrolls IBM Big Blue in dominant 52-6 playoff victory

The defending champion Panasonic Impulse left no doubt about their championship intentions, delivering a commanding 52-6 victory over IBM Big Blue in the XLeague Rice Bowl Tournament quarterfinals.

Offensive explosion

Panasonic‘s offense operated with ruthless efficiency, scoring seven touchdowns and amassing significant yardage both on the ground and through the air. The game was effectively decided by halftime after a stunning second-quarter explosion where Panasonic put up 28 points. Quarterback Yuya Araki was highly efficient, completing 10 of 13 passes for 156 yards and 2 touchdowns before giving way to Kobayashi Hiromitsu, who added another 132 yards and a touchdown through the air.

Ground game dominance

The running attack was equally devastating, led by a strong performance from Genmei Tachikawa, who rushed for 72 yards and 2 touchdowns on just 9 carries. Victor Mitchell contributed 60 yards and a touchdown on the ground while also adding 44 receiving yards and another score, demonstrating the versatile weaponry at Panasonic‘s disposal. Makoto Koizumi added another 37 yards and a touchdown to complete the ground assault.

IBM’s struggles

IBM Big Blue found little room to operate against a stifling Panasonic defense. Quarterbacks Yuki Masamoto and Yoshihito Yagi combined for 181 passing yards, with Yagi connecting with Takataka Suzuki for their lone touchdown in the third quarter. The running game never found traction, managing just 73 total yards spread across multiple ball carriers. Receiver Yuki Amada provided one of the few bright spots with a 53-yard reception.

Looking ahead

The comprehensive victory sends a clear message to the rest of the league that Panasonic Impulse remains the team to beat. Their balanced offensive attack and stout defense overwhelmed an IBM team that simply had no answers. The defending champions advance to the semifinals looking every bit like a team capable of securing back-to-back titles.
