Kiel Baltic Hurricanes remain perfect, trounce Hildeshiem Invaders

The Kiel Baltic Hurricanes are still undefeated in the German Football League after defeating the Hildesheim Invaders 49-14 in front of a 2,189 home crowd at Kilia Stadium in Kiel, Germany this weekend.

Said head coach Marcus Herford: “I’m very proud of the guys. They had to endure a lot of criticism after allowing 41 point against Cologne. Today we showed what we are really capable of.”

The game began on an emotional note, as former player Michael Schernik proposed to his girlfriend before the coin toss. A cheering crowd celebrated her “Yes, I do”.

After receiving the ball via punt, the Hurricanes scored on their first drive via a 73-yard run by running back Chris McClendon. After that, quarterback Jared Stegman threw his first interception of the season, but his receiver Kwame Ofori forced the fumble and the ball was recovered by Kiel. The offense used this second chance by extending the lead with a 54-yard touchdown by Stegman to Benedikt Englmann.

After yet another touchdown pass, this time to Xavier Mitchell, the Invaders were able to score as well with a touchdown pass of their own, courtesy of quarterback Zach Cavanaugh and Paul Jung. Hildesheim didn’t use another chance to score after Jacob Adelman intercepted a Kiel pass near the end zone, rather did the Hurricanes extend their lead by Englmann’s second touchdown reception of the day.

The second half mirrored the progress of the first one, as Kiel was able to score first, Hildesheim answered with a touchdown of their own, and the Hurricanes once again bypass the Invaders’ defense for a final score of 49-14.

The Hurricanes will face the Dresden Monarchs next week at DDV Stadion, celebrating the 25-year anniversary of the Saxon team.
