Kuopio Steelers take over top spot as Maple League playoff race heats up

Three Week 9 results reshuffled the Finnish Maple League standings with three rounds remaining in the regular season. The Kuopio Steelers moved into first place with a dramatic 35-33 victory over the Seinäjoki Crocodiles, the Porvoon Butchers rolled past the East City Giants 48-10, and the defending champion Helsinki Roosters extended their winning streak to four games with a 47-7 rout of the Wasa Royals.

1. Kuopio Steelers (6-2)

The Steelers grabbed first place by surviving a furious second-half comeback from Seinäjoki. Joshua Mack rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns, while Iiro Pekkarinen kicked two field goals that proved crucial in a game decided by two points. Kuopio now has the upper hand in the battle for the regular-season title, but the race is far from settled. The Steelers travel to Seinäjoki for an immediate rematch Saturday.

2. Porvoon Butchers (5-2)

The Butchers delivered one of their most complete performances of the season, racing to a 41-7 halftime lead on the way to a 48-10 victory over East City. Donovan Isom completed 14 of 21 passes for 231 yards and four touchdowns, while Christian Powell rushed for 111 yards and two scores and led Porvoo with five receptions for 44 yards and another touchdown. The win keeps the Butchers firmly in the race for the top spots.

3. Seinäjoki Crocodiles (5-2)

The Crocodiles slipped from first to third but remain right in the championship picture. CJ Fowler threw for 270 yards and also led Seinäjoki in rushing, while Mauricio Porcha caught 13 passes for 170 yards and three touchdowns as the Crocodiles nearly erased a 20-7 halftime deficit.

They will not have to wait long for another opportunity against Kuopio, with Saturday’s rematch at Wirokit Stadium carrying major implications near the top of the standings.

4. Helsinki Roosters (4-3)

The defending champions continue to climb. After opening 0-3, the Roosters have won four straight and strengthened their hold on fourth place. Ambro Urjansson completed 24 of 31 passes for 253 yards and four touchdowns against Wasa, with Corintheus Edmonds catching all four scoring passes. Helsinki has gone from early-season trouble to a serious factor in the playoff race.

5. Tampere Saints (2-5)

The Saints were idle in Week 9 and remain fifth. With three rounds still to play, Tampere has time to make a move, but the margin for error is shrinking as the teams above them continue to pick up wins.

6. East City Giants (2-7)

The Giants dropped to 2-7 following their 48-10 loss to Porvoo. East City was held to just 19 rushing yards and surrendered six sacks in a difficult afternoon against the Butchers defense.

7. Wasa Royals (2-5)

The Royals suffered their fifth consecutive defeat as Helsinki pulled away for a 47-7 victory. Wasa managed 177 total yards and only 34 on the ground. With three rounds remaining, the Royals need to reverse that slide quickly if they are going to climb back into contention.
