The American Football League Europe returns to Florence on Sunday as the Firenze Red Lions (0-3) host the Wroclaw Panthers (3-1) in a Week 6 matchup featuring two teams heading in opposite directions. While Wroclaw arrives looking to strengthen its playoff position after a bye week, Firenze hopes a coaching change and two weeks of preparation can spark a turnaround in its inaugural AFLE season. The game has also been moved forward by 30 minutes to a 2:30 p.m. CET kickoff to help players cope with the expected summer heat.

Fresh start for Firenze

The bye week brought significant changes for the Red Lions, who will take the field under new head coach Mike Mitchell following the departure of Bill Shuey. Paul Wulff assumes offensive coordinator duties, while John Leijten takes over the defense.

There is no shortage of offensive talent for Firenze. Quarterback Matthew McKay threw for 252 yards and three touchdowns in his last outing, while Keith Emmanuel Coffee II led the league that week with 127 receiving yards. Young Italian receiver Lorenzo Cinelli has also emerged as one of the league’s brightest prospects after a 140-yard performance in Week 3, and Brandon Belgrave has contributed in the running game.

Panthers bring momentum

The Panthers head to Italy with confidence after winning three of their first four games. Head coach Dave Likins has guided a balanced team that has excelled on both sides of the ball, making Wroclaw one of the favorites in the South-Eastern Conference.

After a week off to recover from minor injuries, the Panthers will look to continue the aggressive, disciplined football that has fueled their strong start. Playing on the road against a motivated opponent means they cannot afford to overlook a Firenze team still searching for its first victory.

Heat could play a role

Player safety has prompted the league to move kickoff to 2:30 p.m. CET, allowing for longer and more frequent water and shade breaks throughout the afternoon. Firenze will wear its traditional red jerseys, while the Panthers will play in white to help reduce the effects of the heat.

Despite the records, this game offers intrigue. The Red Lions have shown flashes of offensive potential, while the Panthers know another victory would further strengthen their position near the top of the standings.
