The Aalborg 89ers look to bounce back from their season opening loss as they host the Søllerød Gold Diggers in this Saturday night.
The game will be the season opener for the Gold Diggers in the third week of play in Denmark.
Fans can expect the 89ers offense to include more short passes as quarterback Shelton Eppler was sacked often in their season opener. Look for Eppler to target Margus Urth tonight as the 89ers look to keep up with a talented Gold diggers team.

Eppler commented on the 89ers matchup with Søllerød:
“We’re ready, obviously not the outcome we wanted but we cannot dwell on the past. We’re worried about going 1-0 this week, and controlling the things we can control. I’m excited to see us compete and show everyone the amazing opportunity we have in front of us.”
Defensively, 89ers defender Tobias Fogtmann play will be crucial tonight for Aalborg. The 6’2″, 240 pound linebacker brings experience from the junior college level in the states and played well in the season opener. In the secondary, Miloc Illic looks to take away the opponent’s best receiver as he has all the traits to be a lockdown corner.
The Søllerød Gold Diggers head into the season with veteran coach Troels Vestergaard at the helm once again. On the field however the offense will be led by quarterback Aaron Ellis. Ellis returns to Denmark as he played for the Frederikssund Oaks in 2019. Ellis will have a talented receiving core as Danish all star Thomas Ashworth returns to the Gold Diggers and experienced receiver Taylor Enkstrom joins. Ellis commented on Sollerods pre-season preparation:
“The team feels great, I’ve had the luxury of being in Denmark already for 5 months now practicing with the guys and I feel like we have a very close and talented unit.”
Defensively, Søllerød brings back edge defender Logan Dykstra. Dykstra was one of the best defender in Denmark in 2020, earning an All-star nod from the coaches. The defense has also added linebacker Sam Taylor, French defensive lineman Saliou Sale, and Spanish defensive back Pol Cunillera. The new additions will be led by veteran linebacker Jimi Laursen. Laursen and the defense will have to contain a 89ers offense lead by Shelton Eppler that has a chance to score on any play.
Søllerød looks to set the tone for a successful season in 2021 after a 3-1 record in the 2020 shortened season. Meanwhile the 89ers aim to bounce back with a win today in front of their home fans.
